Balancing the positive and the negative is very important. The solution to chronic negative thinking is not chronic positive thinking. I like the concept of Positive Response Ability...where one battles with problems internally...pitting positive thoughts against negative thoughts...and eventually emerging with a positive response or solution. A surgeon must understand how dire a problem is before they can begin to formulate a solution. The agony and the ecstasy!
