Iapatus is actually artificial, and if you look closely you will see it is made of many sides, and not spherical at all.

The 'ridge' is a launching system and surveillance platform. Hence it got pummelled stupid. Also, it was the main 'vulnerability', as the crust is actually nearly 11miles thick at its THINNEST.

Inside it is the left overs of a civilisation long destroyed. However, certain systems within it are still functional - any one who can aim a radio telescope at it is in for a big suprise.
