any ideas on what this symbol means?

Looks like a cteis to me. A vesica piscis. The dark womb of the feminine. The void or yoni, the 'created' aspect from where 'creation' springs forth. These are of course not meant to be taken in their 'lower' ideals.

Those lines at the top and the bottom seem to represent spiraling motion. The purple or violet(?) is a fixed (spiritual) colour the higher end of the 3d spectrum, fixed red (material) being the lowest, The 5 inbetween dynamic colours being the balancing factors.

How did you friend see this? Was it during dream time?
