Sorry shy, I certainly didn't want to taint any childhood memories. I loved Yertle too (for some reason when I think of it though, it reminds me of the dentist's office). I read "Hop on Pop" w/ my nephew just last week.

However if you check the wiki link, it does indeed seem that Giesel wrote Yertle w/ facism in mind.

Quote:
"Yertle the Turtle", in which the titular Yertle, king of the pond, stands on his subjects in an attempt to reach higher than the moon—until the bottom turtle burps and he falls into the mud, ending his rule. The story, among Seuss's most notable, is widely recognized as condemning fascism and absolute power; the despotic ruler Yertle was intended to parallel the dictator Adolf Hitler.
It seems that king Yertle was paralleled w/ Hitler, so his human counterpart does have some bad stuff on his hands.

This is not a bad thing though, as I will pose that subconsciously, Suess may be part of the reason that you are here (i.e; Suess taught children at a very formidable age that fascism is unjust).
