I'm with you in that sentiment. On the face of things all would appear lost but hey, guess what, the awakening hasn't passed, it is just beginning and this is our role.
We can't fret over what would we do or not do given the same or similar circumstance, the thing is what ARE we doing. I spoke about this in my inaction equals complicity thread.
