What works best for me is neither complete silence nor too much noise.
For example, at work in the office there is constant noise anyway, but when I go to bed and I know I cannot ignore it I usually listen to music on my iPod or Podcasts and fall asleep easily.
My ear doctor has suggested that if I knew I will go to noisy places I should put some cotton in my ear.
He also asked if I was exposed to very loud music, e. g. concerts
Do Pink Floyd, Killing Joke and Young Gods concerts count as "loud" ?
Hope that helps and good luck

I have it as well, for many years. High pitch ringing. Constantly. I can notice when i start to sleep and the surrounding noise is low. During the day when surrounding noise is high, can hear the ringing only if I can shut out the surrounding noice by covering my years for example. Once in a while there is a sudden amplified version of the ringing and it almost drown out all other surrounding noise.
I have looked it online and got the same answer, tinitus. Nothing unusual.
Though in the movie, encounter of the third kind, the script has it that the main character who attained some contact to UFO experience ringing in the ear. Is it right?
