Default Foods You Should Be Eating, But Aren't

Improving your health can be as simple as eating these items.

Eaten many coconuts lately? How about cherries or blueberries or grass-fed beef?

You should, because these are all foods with powerful health properties. However, few people pack their grocery carts full of these items.

Take kiwifruit. It's chock full of vitamin C--a whopping 115% of what you need to eat in a day. It's also low in calories--just 45 per fruit, sans skin.

"In America, most people don't eat three servings of fruit and vegetables a day," says nutritionist Jonny Bowden, author of seven books including, most recently, The 150 Most Effective Ways to Boost Your Energy. According to him, there are 10 very healthy foods we don't eat enough of.


Ignore the Food Pyramid

Bowden says many Americans are misled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's food pyramid, which is a graphic, pyramid-shaped depiction of nutrition guidelines, updated every five years, that tells Americans what to eat according to food groups. Bowden dismisses it as the product of interest group politics.
"It demonizes fat," notes Bowden. "Fat is an essential building block for many important compounds in the body." This is why Bowden puts grass-fed beef, wild salmon and, yes, coconuts, on his top 10 list.

Salmon, in particular, is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which are associated with heart and brain health as well as bringing down blood pressure and triglycerides, a risk factor for heart disease. Omega-3s have also been found to improve mood and reduce inflammation, says Bowden.

Another food packed with nutritional value that's present--but not necessarily front and center in every grocery store--is kale. A member of the cabbage family, which Bowden dubs "vegetable royalty," kale contains indoles, a compound found to fight cancer. Kale is also rich in antioxidants, which also help prevent cancer, says Bowden.

If that's not enough for you, kale is also full of sulforaphane, yet another cancer-prevention agent. Kale has calcium, iron and vitamins A, C and K, and two nutrients that are great for the eyes, including zeaxanthin. Kale's pièce de résistance: Two cups packs three grams of fiber. Try sautéing it with garlic and butter, recommends Bowden. Or eat it like salad, with pine nuts, cranberries and olive oil.

Then there are coconuts, a terribly misunderstood food, according to Bowden. The fat in coconuts is a particular kind that's good for you. It's called MCT, or Medium-Chain Triglycerides. The body doesn't store MCT as fat, says Bowden, but rather uses it as energy, like a carbohydrate. Coconuts are also high in lauric acid, a fatty acid that tends to kill pathogens. In addition, coconut oil is great for cooking since it has a very high smoke point.


Eat Mediterranean

For Bowden, sticking to a Mediterranean-style diet is the healthiest way to eat. That means plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, and lots of olive and nut oils. The Mediterranean diet has indeed been proved by study after study to have multiple healthful properties.
If all that sounds just too darn healthy, consider the 10th food on Bowden's list: dark chocolate. Rich with a phytochemical called flavanol, found by a 2005 study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology to improve cardiovascular health, chocolate with at least 60% cocoa content should be a regular on your shopping list.

Chocolate and coconut anyone? OK, but not until you've finished your kale.

Just started the South Beach diet which is Mediterranean. We only have grass fed beef here, lots of coconuts and we eat blueberries regularly. Love broccoli too and also eat Alaska salmon. I buy it in the cans and make a spread out of it much like tuna fish salad.

We are putting in our aquaponics garden and will have nutrient fresh fruits and veggies soon. We also planted an orchard of oranges, mango, papaya, apple, pear, plum, avacado, coffee, banana, loquat, lemon, lime, lychee, tangerine trees as a start toward more self-sufficiency. Next is getting some nut and bread fruit trees. Taro grows really well here and the root is very healthful. I also have the purple sweet potatoes in the ground and a very nice pineapple patch. The only problem with many of the trees is that they are still young and not producing yet.

The aquaponics system will also provide fish and shrimp. Power foods are pumpkin, spinach, blue berries, salmon, oats, almonds, red bell peppers among a few. Our chickens provide fresh eggs. All we are missing is the cow.

I really LOVE this thread... Wish I could see Moor threads abt plants that
provide for our health and well being....

I can see and feel the energy that comes from plants [Radiates] from plants... It'll tinggle your finger tips...Every flower has a 'wave' that it sends out its really beautiful... Even after a branch is cut it still sends these Energy waves
from the leaves... I bet if You use a UV/in fo red camera everybody could see
this... Wonderous things plants and when we ingest them WE become
BALANCED.... Plants are FREQUENCY GENERATORS...

Remember, 'You Are' what you put in your Hole. Big or small som can eat it ALL...

There was a study that proved that 1.5 cups of blueberries a day could reverse age related declines in motor skills and cognitive function.

The miracle of plant consumption in my opinion is COLOR. It is very beneficial to include the full spectrum of colors in your diet.

There is a "rainbow diet" where you eat red yellow and orange in the morning. Greens at noon or mid-day meal. Blue indigo and violet for the evening meal.

The color red may help reverse tumors.

Beet root, Blood root, raspberries.

Cherry (real cherry) anything (even jam) helps gout.

2 stalks of celery a day can help lower blood pressure (you know, that unique strong flavor in celery, is the active molecule.

I have a huge book (somewhere[looking around]) that lists the medicinal properties and other facts about foods.

Back to the topic. Interesting about cherries helping gout, I'm a believer in the benefits of rasberries, they help control the growth of bacteria, help cholesterol, and are a good antioxidant. I'm a big fan of beets also for their iron content as I don't eat liver. Eating fruits and vegatables by color and balancing them everyday is a huge health benefit.

I've been eating this way for years now and also grow my own herbs and vegetables. Farmer's markets are great for getting fresh produce I don't have room to grow and local eggs.

Here's an interesting take on the healthful benefits of food:



A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye...and YES science now shows that carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart is red and has four chambers. All of the research shows
tomatoes are indeed pure heart and blood food.



Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows that grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.



A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds are on the nut just like the neo-cortex. We now know that walnuts help develop over 3 dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Hope i am not too far off the main topic here but I have a question for anyone with the knowledge to help me. I am trying to find more information on using and preserving lambs quarters. I eat it raw and in salads but I am seeking information about utilizing it in fermentation, freezing, etc. It grows in such abundance here in central Kansas that I just hate to not take further advantage of it if possible. I have read that it can be blanched and frozen and the broth frozen for a soup stock as well. But I am curious about the use of the stems as this is a very labor intensive plant to harvest. So if anyone could help with knowledge or resources I would be very grateful.

Getting natural or organically grown is so important too so it is full of nutrients and is hopefully not a GMO plant.

The reason grass feed is so important is because it raises the omega 3 to omega 6 ratio of fats in the meat whn grass fed. Avoid corn fed meat!

I did a lot of research on this for anti-cancer food. Very important for you brain and glands.

fresh linseed is also important ( I have the seeds in a coffee grinder to put in yogurts and cereal)

Selnium is also vvery important anti-cancerfood... two brazil nuts / day is enough.

Of course if you are still drinking tap water and using fluoride toothpaste it is 1 step forward, 2 back... In the book "Minerals for the Genetic Code" Charles Walters dedicates 9 pages to the history of Sodium Fluoride and how it was found as a good mind suppressor by Nazi Germany (IG Farben). It also talks about how it shuts the body down... to quote:

"The thyroid pathways keep your memory working and your brain functioning. When fluorine enters, it shuts down 72 known iodine pathways, an you end up getting hypo-thyroidism and people who can't rember their names. Add teeth rot to the above"
