I need to ask everyone to please cooperate with this rule.
Just post a summary or a paragraph and a link to the web page hosting the article.

Question:

Since bandwith is a concern here, what about posting very large pictures, & sometimes many large pics in one post. What about posting You-tube vids, many of them in the same post. Do they not take up bandwith, the same as long text posts?

Not picking on anyone here, just trying to understand what the limits are and are not.

It's not just about band width. It's more about respecting people's copyrights. I've made a lot of comments about the whys in previous posts in this thread. I supposed in a perfect world everything would be all lined up, cut and dried, but in this world there are grey areas, overlaps, etc, and you have to pick a point at which to draw the line. I'm just trying to do the best we can with the guidelines the way I found them when I came on as moderator. It's a pretty standard set of guidelines for maintaining order in online bulletin boards, email discussion groups, and internet forums.

Here's a link to the guidelines:

Just a technical point here - those things do use up bandwidth for the user, but not for Camelot/Avalon's server. The bandwidth they use is the server that is linked to (eg: youtube, or that of the picture hosting sites). When I am working remotely I can block those images to save my broadband caps and still be able to browse Avalon. Many people still use low speed telephone and modem connections and large postings can be a problem for them.

So really the point is about not forceing people to download content that given a choice they would not have. That is why a brief description and a link is kinder.

More extreme examples of breaking this rule include threads comprised of books posted one chapter at a time per post! Or many posts containing long sections of an even longer article Is the kind of thing we have seen (and removed) - a link to scribd or the source is better for everyone.

A..

Tks mods for clearing up this somewhat confusing issue.

Seashore,

The moderators are talking about this subject with Ent like haste (keep getting distractions - the joys of post subscription moderator life)

There is a question of restricting a members original work. The prevailing consensus appears to be that we would not do that.

Thoughts?

I agree...

if someone takes the time to type it out...then why not?

Or do you mean...if its original work of theirs, they can copy paste?

I suppose that is ok too...but why not just a link?

Limiting me to just what I write is dangerous. At my age, I tend to ramble on.

Limiting me to "relevant portions" of other's text, isn't a problem at all. In fact, it gives one scope for one's own words, which keeps everyone else from snoring.

If a member wants to present an article for discussion on the forum, I like it better if the article can be posted in its entirety - rather than the first two paragraphs - because it makes it much easier to quote parts of the article that people want to comment on.

Agree and in the context of "outside text" that is what we want.

Unfortunately that runs counter to the spirit of what we are trying to acheive here.

There should be a link for you to follow, and quoting external text (in moderation) was always possible and never prohibited except when it was too long).

Bill, and possibly Kerry and the team of moderators. At some point all of those people would be involved in the final decision to make any changes to the guidelines.

Apart from all the technical mumbo jumbo; I find it often rather irritating to see big chunks of quotated text or - even worst, quotated graphics.
Also I do not understand what is unclear in:
Posting long passages of outside text is prohibited.
Honestly...

Here is a post that illustrates my point. I believe that a link to this article would discourage people from breaking down the article and discussing it:

How about we encourage folks to make videos of their posts or threads? I maybe doing this at some point and will offer it as a possibility from that video as well. That way you just place the link for the video of your post or thread. Having a video or more videos created just for a forum is pretty cool in my opinion. It gives such forum more life, yes? Because it puts a living beings face, voice, facial expressions and so much more into it all.
