Post Re: Montreal Radiant Zone mtg (July 5/2009)

Hi all,

I'd like to propose a meeting time of 4:00 pm on Sunday, July 5.
Meeting place to be determined once we know the number of attendees.

Please try and confirm your presence by Thursday, July 2 so that if there are enough participants I have time to make the necessary arrangements for the booking of the meeting place I have found in the West Island.

Because Avalon was down, we were only able to meet with a few members, but we had a meeting that went from 9:00am to 6:30pm, and didn't even stop for lunch, if that can be believed.

In any case, we have enough agreement that we hope to be able to start building the center this year. The redesigned center is intended to be bermed and is expected to survive any expected wind speed (in excess of 300 mph) and also specially design to survive earthquakes intact as a unit. Here's a picture of the new design:

NS have you looked up John Hait's site on his Pahs systems of earth building. They are very simple but also advanced. Pahs stands for: Passive Annual Heat Storage (I thinK!) Something like that, but the system is designed to collect heat in the summer and radiate during the winter with no other heating required. Buildings designed this way stay at 70 degrees summer and winter.

Cheers

Carmen

Hi Carmen,

I just checked it up. I understand the principle, but need to look into it more. I'm using ICF (integrated concrete forms), which stabilises the temperature over 24 hours, but does not have the thermal mass of what you mentioned. Also the earth needs to be dry to work, and I don't know how easy this is, considering that the expect scenario involves a lot of rain.

I understand you have a lot of ideas, so will get a chance to discuss.

Best Regard,
Wayne

Here's a wiki info on the PAHS system that Carmen mentioned. Actually, it might be feasible to apply that to my present design as the inside court will be used as an enclosed greenhouse, so maybe the earth in the court area can be used as a storage medium.

Hi Susan,

Yes, I should be around. Will you be dropping by? Some of the people are taking vacation in July and will be back in August. Everyone is eager to meet you.
