Default Enviro Pigs

Yes you heard it right...EnviroPigs..

Brought to you by the university of Guelph Ontario..

Enviropig moves ahead

(2/19/2010)

Environment Canada is set to announce that the University of Guelph has successfully satisfied the requirements of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act allowing the "Enviropig" to be produced using approved containment procedures.

The news is scheduled to be published in the Canada Gazette on Saturday but is available online now at www.gazette.gc.ca/index-eng.html .

The university has been producing a line of Enviropigs since 1999 strictly for scientific study. However, the goal has always been to explore practical options for use of the technology to allow the animals to have positive impacts for both the environment and industry, said Steven Liss, associate vice-president (research services).

The Enviropig was the first transgenic animal created to solve an environmental problem — phosphorus pollution in surface and groundwater. The pigs are genetically modified so that they can utilize a normally indigestible form of phosphorus in feed grains. As a result, they produce manure that is more environmentally friendly. Published scientific studies have confirmed phosphorus levels that are 30-65% lower than those of regular pig manure.

Applications to other federal agencies to assess the safety of Enviropigs for human food and animal feed are currently under review both in the U.S. and Canada and there is no set date when or if these reviews will conclude, Liss said.

The University of Guelph is the sole owner and producer of the animals, which are kept in secure facilities. Working closely with the government, the university will continue to breed the animals under strict confinement and control measures, Liss said.

I bet the **** still stinks. Really, can't clever people find anything better to do than create a pig that omits less methane. What an absolute waist of your money.

Oh wait.... !! "Don't order yet!"

I mean it...

Scientists hope three transgenic pigs will boost stem cell research

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16385433/

BEIJING - Chinese scientists have successfully bred partially green fluorescent pigs which they hope will boost stem cell research, Xinhua news agency said.

A research team at the Northeast Agricultural University in Harbin managed to breed three transgenic pigs by injecting fluorescent green protein into embryonic pigs, Xinhua quoted Professor Liu Zhonghua as saying.

"The mouth, trotters and tongue of the pigs are green under ultraviolet light," said Liu.

Genetic material from jellyfish was injected into the womb of a sow which gave birth to the three pigs 114 days later in Harbin, he said.

They actually call this kind of thing a "breakthrough". They're so kind to themselves.

And pigs are just the start. They have done similar gene splicing experiments on potatoes!

They mixed in a little genetic material from a deep-ocean fish. End result is a potato that begins to glow in the dark, when it needs watering.

I really don't care if they claim to understand what they're doing. Or even if they actually do. Some things you just don't Futz with... like our food.
