Question Snowing on Mars!!!

NASA extends Phoenix mission as snow falls on Mars

Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - NASA extended the mission of the busy Phoenix lander Monday, saying it will operate the lander until it dies in the cold and dark of the Martian winter.

It is already snowing there, above the equivalent of the Arctic circle on Mars, the researchers said.

The explorer found evidence that the dust on the surface of Mars resembles seawater in its chemical makeup, adding to evidence that liquid water that once may have supported life flowed on the planet's surface.

The Phoenix lander already has operated far longer than expected when it was dropped onto the Martian surface in May, and its controllers said they would squeeze every drop of life they could out of the solar-powered lander.

"We are literally trying to make hay as the sun shines," Barry Goldstein, Phoenix project manager at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, told reporters.

Scheduled to last just 90 Martian days, known as sols, the lander has already operated for more than 120.

But soon the sun will dip below the horizon until next April. Already the lander is getting less power, after a summer of light-filled days that resemble the months of daylight enjoyed at the Earth's poles in the summer.

Mars weatherman Jim Whiteway of York University in Toronto, Canada, said the lander has seen snow, frost and clouds forming as the atmosphere cools, although the snow is vaporizing before reaching the ground.

"Nothing like this view has ever been seen on Mars," Whiteway said. "We'll be looking for signs that the snow may even reach the ground."

LET IT SNOW

Scientists had known it likely snowed on Mars but the lander got unique measurements showing it happening in real time.

The lander has already gathered more evidence of water on the surface of the now-dry planet. In July, the Phoenix team reported definitive proof that water exists on Mars after the lander scraped up ice, and it also found perchlorate -- a chemical compound sometimes used by plants and microbes.

It also sent back the first-ever image of a speck of red Martian dust taken through an atomic force microscope.

The latest analysis shows evidence of a carbonate chemical, likely calcium carbonate -- best known as limestone, said William Boynton, who leads a team that operates the lander's Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer at the University of Arizona.

And, said JPL's Michael Hecht, further analysis shows the Martian dust is about as alkaline as seawater, with a pH of 8.3. This provides more evidence that life could have existed on Mars.

Hey, Rocky,

Seems like nasa is starting to release little tidbits of info lately... stuff that they would've heavily censored in the not to distant past. I wonder when they're going to tell us that Mars' sky is really blue!

May 1979... the last time they showed us snow on the ground...

See the thing is...

NASA has THREE channels

1) for the Sheeple that will buy anything
2) for Serious researchers that know where to look
3) for the DoD and NO ONE sees that stuff

Now on channel #1 you get dark red skys and rocks... little light... in general not a pretty picture...

But on channel #2 you get this...

And you get a closeup of the famous Blueberries... so you can see WHY they called them Blueberries in the first place

And you can see the sulphur and salt deposits that Spirit dug up

And don't forget the closeups of the rocks...

Vesicular Basalt or Scoria..

Here it is on Mars...

Here is a specimen from Earth in my collection

Here is another one on Mars so you can compare the color

Yes Alice the skies ARE blue on Mars... unless there is a dust storm...

This was shown to us by the Viking Lander

Yes it snows on Mars... that was shown by the Viking Lander in 1976... 32 years ago (top of post)

Yes there are clouds on Mars

And yes their are MARTIANS on Mars... and they are not pleased

I've got more ice photos, Arthur.

Coming. I'll stick them in my Mars Album.

hmmmm, so if they do have a stargate to mars, is it possible as our oceans are rising they are allowing them to just pour through the stargate?

Hello Zorgon

Thank you for sharing

I must say these are spectacular photos

I was so taken by the beauty of them

We don't get a chance to see these in the normal media

Such Solitude...
Such Peacefullness...

And to think that they are keeping these all to themselves....SHAME ON THEM.

Except for the last one, IT MUST BE A JOKE NO DOUBT???

If you are willing to share more I welcome it...

Thank you....Isis

ICE??

Like as in frozen lakes?

As in the North Pole on Mars?

The thing I always fine amusing (read sickening) in NASA(Need Another Space Agency) press releases is they tend to make people think its something new...

Yet the ESA (European Space Agency) showed us this in AUGUST 2005

Water Ice Lake in a crater with snow on the rim...

Now Viking already showed us the Martian Temperature...

Atmospheric temperatures are the featured Pathfinder meteorological observations and the temperatures encountered at the surface of Earth and Mars provide the primary basis for these developments. The temperatures on the two Viking landers, measured at 1.5 meters above the surface, range from + 1° F, ( -17.2° C) to -178° F (-107° C). However, the temperature of the surface at the winter polar caps drop to -225° F, (-143° C) while the warmest soil occasionally reaches +81° F (27° C) as estimated from Viking Orbiter Infrared Thermal Mapper. The diurnal cycle of atmospheric temperature is as important meteorologically as it is on Earth, but it is less important in other contexts: the reason will become evident in the lessons that follow. The diurnal temperature variation at Viking Lander 1 at the same season as Pathfinder is landing is illustrated here and described below.

http://www-k12.atmos.washington.edu/..._overview.html

Plus 81 degrees fahrenheit... sounds downright balmy

So what happens when you mix known water ice with known temperature of PLUS 81 degrees F???

Here's another snow photo from the NASA Rover, very very recent. As you know it's winter there now. This photo is too large for the album. If it's a problem, I'll move it or remove it.

Also, when you see it in correct scale and you know it's correct scale because the human shows up in reasonable proportion -- and remove all color -- you have WHITE SNOW lying all over the ground. If the ground were actually a red color, it would show up as DARK grey on black-and-white, right? Right.

And when you see and identify the woman's figure standing there, you realize, she's standing next to a snow-plowed road, with other people behind her. Next, you notice, she's walking past the huge heads of dormant, hibernating serpents encased in snow. I wouldn't know this except that serpents, snakes, dragons, vipers are a primary motif that shows up in most of NASA's photos. What I'm hoping is that someone from NASA will explain to me, why the explanations get so garbled when it's so simple to address the photographic elements and see what's real, in the photos, in the first place.

All you great Guys, thank you for the continued photos.

So spectacular!!!!

Does anyone know where that human figure came from?...isn't it cold or freezing there right now? She wasn't wearing worn clothing from what I could see. Unless they're warm blooded.

So much out there

So much to learn

So much we would love to be part of in the knowing

We owe it you for coming forth and educating some of us

Thank you and God bless

I'm still combing through the NASA databases. I'll continue to see what else I can find that is purely educational.

Glad somebody finds this stuff interesting, besides myself.

Man, everything in this reality is just simply interesting. As long as it's not Hollywood TV or irrational young blondes, it's good in my book.
