What is Markawasi?

I first heard about Markawasi last year. I don't have a lot of information on it but have variously heard it referred to as a "Museum in Stone", or "Stone Forest", or "Monument to Humanity". Is anyone familiar with this place? There are some links below, two of which I found just today and haven't looked at closely.

Here are some very specific quotes from Dr. Robert M. Schoch about it:
