Tom Hanks Will Flip CERN On in June
Tom Hanks to switch on repaired Large Hadron Collider
By Alastair Jamieson Last Updated: 9:30AM GMT 18 Feb 2009 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sciencean...-Collider.html After the September 2008 malfunction... "Hanks was approached about the move while filming his latest film Angels and Demons in which he plays a Harvard University academic investigating a plot to annihilate the Vatican with 0.25 grams of antimatter stolen from Cern. Steve Myers, Cern's director of accelerators and technology, told Nature News that he gave the actor a tour of the laboratory on February 13 and asked him if he would return for the switch-on, to which the actor agreed. Cern's head of communications, James Gillies, confirmed that the facility would be delighted to have Hanks there to restart the collider, which organisers hope will take place in June." -- ---------------- Related: Linear Colliders http://www.fnal.gov/directorate/icfa...ctivities.html Understanding Matter, Energy, Space and Time: the Case for the Linear Collider http://www.nu.to.infn.it/New_Physics/ This document, supported by a significant portion of the international high energy physics community, presents a unified vision of the physics potential of the linear collider. The statement has helped the International Linear Collider Steering Committee to define the scope of the baseline facility. The document, "Understanding Matter, Energy, Space and Time: the Case for the Linear Collider": Adobe Acrobat pdf file 15pp This statement was written by the World Wide Study Group for the Physics and Detectors for the Linear Collider and is intended to convey the unified vision of the international particle physics community. It is the first attempt by the global community to articulate the scientific rationale for the linear collider, operating concurrently with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Those wishing to add their name to the list of supporters may do so at this link. Although the document is written for particle physicists, we hope that it will be accessible to scientists in related disciplines. It may also serve as the basis for other documents that convey the case for the linear collider to those in governments and the general public. Silvestrini, V. Sordini, A. Stocchi, V. Vagnoni (Submitted on 5 Mar 2008) http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/arxiv/pdf/...803.0659v1.pdf Abstract: We combine all the available experimental information on Bs mixing, including the very recent tagged analyses of Bs to J/Psi phi by the CDF and D0 collaborations. We find that the phase of the Bs mixing amplitude deviates more than 3 sigma from the Standard Model prediction. While no single measurement has a 3 sigma significance yet, all the constraints show a remarkable agreement with the combined result. This is a first evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. This result disfavours New Physics models with Minimal Flavour Violation with the same significance. ----------------------- Hey, maybe it's this one...?? |

Re: Tom Hanks Will Flip CERN On in June
My feelings are that higher intelligences find human experimentation with the Big Bang to be impertinent.
Is it just more stupid man science stuff??? An over-reaction???? Mixed with angels, demons, the Vatican???? http://www.maviyane.com/socpol-9.html |
