Infiltration of the "New Age movement"
This is a new thread based on a tangent from the "Something is a brewing, HMMMM" thread.
Some of the so called New Age serves as a compendium of archaic wisdom and medicine some of which I find very helpful. Chopra, Dyer, Wilcock, Kabat-Zinn, and Ken Wilbur (who would surely balk at the "New Age" label) to name a few have been notable teachers. I have found no evidence that any of the afore mentioned are agents of "disinfo". There seems to be a sincere effort to distill the teachings of the usual suspects(Jesus, Buddha, blah, blah) as well as more recent imports like Sri Nissargadatta Maharaj, Mahatma Ghandi, Ramana Maharshi, Yogi Bhajan, Thich Nhat Hanh, Kahlil Gibran, and J Krishnamurti. However the vast majority of work in this genre is TOTAL GARBAGE and seems to taint opinions about rich contemplative traditions that can be very useful (brushing aside the usual non-dual notions here) for anyone seeking peace of mind, purpose, etc. Nothing new here. Most recorded music is garbage, most Literature terrible and most films are bad. Part of the problem is the moniker "new age" which connotes dirty hippies, self affirmation playing cards, patchouli oil, Earth Firsters, nit caps, hacky sacks, and listening to Bob Marley's "Legend" (nothing wrong with his Tuff Gong catalogue.. Just sayin') on an ipod in People's Park. Interested in hearing from people with first hand experience with spiritual corruption/ infiltration. Also interested in useful tools: Meditations, pointers, and practices. "Middle sized ideas" as Terrence McKenna used to say.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktqvFGdgo2w |
