Pelosi: Federal Reserve Needs More Transparency

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said this morning that the Federal Reserve should operate with more transparency, one day after President Obama unveiled a financial regulatory overhaul that would give increased authority to the central bank.

"The fact is that the American people want to know more of the 'Secrets of the Temple,'" Pelosi said at her weekly press conference, referring to the 20-year-old book on the Fed she called "required reading in my day."

Even as Obama proposes to give the Fed more power to regulate firms and markets, an increasing number of members of Congress have expressed unease about the bank's growing reach and the murkiness of its finances. A bill authored by Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) calling for a full audit of the Fed's books by the U.S. Comptroller General now has a bipartisan group of 234 co-sponsors.

Pelosi said she did not know the specific details of Paul's bill, but did make clear she wanted to know more about the Fed's balance sheet, particularly since the central bank stepped in to bail out the insurance giant AIG last fall.

"Many of us were, shall we say, not surprised [but] taken aback when the Fed had $80 billion to put into AIG just out of the blue," Pelosi recalled. "All of the sudden you wake up one morning and AIG is receving $80 billion from the Fed. So of course we're saying, 'Where is this money coming from?'" And, she said, the Fed responded: "'Oh, we have it, and not only that, we have more.'"

Pelosi did not criticize any of Obama's financial overhaul proposals, nor did she provide any specifics on how oversight of the Fed should be increased. But, she said, "a balance has to be struck between what is required to run the Fed in a responsible way [and] what transparency there should be, so as the Fed assumes even more power... the American people have more knowledge about it."

Ron Paul at Cato: ‘Audit the Fed’

When Texas Congressman and former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul speaks about transparency in the Federal Reserve, he sums up his argument with one simple question. Why not?

“Why in the world should this much power be given to a Federal Reserve that has the authority to create $1 trillion secretly?” Ron Paul asked a standing room-only crowd today at the Cato Institute.

Paul was on a panel of speakers, including Gilbert Schwartz, former associate general counsel to the Federal Reserve, to discuss a new bill that will audit the Fed for the first time in its history. This comes at a time when the Fed’s balance sheet has almost tripled, from just over $800 billion before the financial crisis to almost $2.3 trillion now.

“We will only win when the people wake up and realize that transparency is what we need,” said Paul. “When we know exactly what’s happening, there will be monetary reform.”

At a recent House Oversight Committee Meeting, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke threatened destruction of the dollar and the US economy if the Fed was audited. Notice how he calls it a "takeover" of monetary policy by Congress if HR 1207 were to pass. Someone needs to school Mr. Bernanke that, under the Constitution, monetary policy belongs to the Congress - not the Fed.

Reuters reprints an article from The Big Money's Chadwick Matlin about Dr. Paul's leadership of an historic bipartisan effort to bring transparency to the Federal Reserve:

Thus we come to the audit. For Paul it's a foot in the door to a much larger goal. To the 244 co-sponsors-74 of them Democrats-it's a way to show their constituents that they're worried, too, about where taxpayer dollars are going. It's an amusing dissonance between the leader of the rebellion and his revolutionaries. The two parties are after entirely separate goals, one (transparency) vastly more achievable than the other (the end of the Federal Reserve).

This again makes Paul's coalition all the more remarkable. The distrust of the Fed has reached a point at which a majority of House members are following a radical into battle. In a 2003 paper, Thomas Laubach, the US Federal Reserve's senior economist, calculated the impact on long-term interest rates of rising fiscal deficits and soaring national debt. The history of the Federal Reserve is an ongoing battle between the Banking elite and the people and anyone who gets in the way is usually crushed. The Fed's lack of accountability and transparency is no longer justified by its record or sound principles or public policy. Granting the power without asking the tough questions would be following the path of least resistance ~ Has any thought been given to refocusing on a financial services model that has more smaller institutions and fewer mega banks, thus diversifying risk? TIME LINE OF THE ROTHSCHILD OWNED FEDERAL RESERVE BANK

1791-1811: Rothschild's First Bank of the United States.

1816-1836: Rothschild's Second Bank of the United States.

1837-1862: Free Banking Era - no formal Central Bank through the efforts of President Andrew Jackson, who , according to Jackson, the Rothschild's later tried to assassinate.

1862-1913: System of National Banks through the efforts of President Andrew Jackson.

In 1862 Abraham Lincoln issued his own fiat money to finance the Civil War and bucked the New York Banks who wanted to charge the government 24- 30% interest on any loans. Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865.

President James Garfield tried to buck the banks and was assassinated on July 2, 1881.

1913-Current: President Wilson Federal Reserve Act creates a consortium of privately held Jewish & associated banks called the Federal Reserve Bank. The largest shareholders of the Federal Reserve Bank are the Rothschild's of London holding 57% of the stock which is not available for public trading.

On May 23 1933, Congressman Louis T. McFadden brought impeachment charges against the members of the Federal Reserve Bank. A smear campaign against McFadden ensued and he was poisoned 3 years later.

On June 4th 1963, John F Kennedy signed Executive Order 1110 which returned to the U.S. Government the power to issue currency without going through the Federal reserve. With the stroke of his pen, President Kennedy was on his way to putting the Federal Reserve Bank of New York out of business ~ for that order gave the U.S. the ability to create its own money backed by silver. Five months later on November 22, 1963 Kennedy was assassinated.

Senate turns aside new attempt to scrutinize Fed

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve, facing growing pressure as it tries to heal the ailing economy, dodged a bullet on Monday when the U.S. Senate cast aside a new effort to increase scrutiny of the central bank.

On procedural grounds, the Senate blocked a bid to permit the U.S. comptroller general, who heads the investigative arm of Congress known as the Government Accountability Office, to audit the Federal Reserve system and issue a report.

Republican Senator Jim DeMint, who has been pushing for greater transparency at the Fed, failed to get the provision attached to the must-pass annual spending bill that includes funding for the GAO for the upcoming 2010 fiscal year.

On MSNBC today (HR1207 is starting to get some spotlight in the MSM.):

Legislators are sick of not knowing what's going on inside Bernanke's fortress, especially as the Fed becomes further enmeshed in the nation's fiscal policy. Paul's little bill has become emblematic of a larger movement, one that could spell trouble for Obama's troubled regulatory plan. Ron Paul — always an enemy of regulation — is now an enemy of Obama. And a mighty powerful one at that.
