Lightbulb FRANKEN FOODS ~ Sign Up for the NO GMO CHALLENGE ~ C2C Show

Last night on Coast to Coast AM a very well presented plan to get rid of GMO's ( backwards ) in our food. I imagine it will be up on youtube soon or could someone add the link here if they find it first.

Thanks,

PaL

Appearing during the first half of the program, noted food expert Jeffrey M. Smith discussed how genetically engineered "Franken-foods" have become ubiquitous on everyone's dinner table.

Institute for Responsible Technology

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert foreign genes into the DNA of food crops or animals. Those genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans. GMOs are not safe, but have been in the food supply since 1996. Most Americans say they would not eat GMOs if labeled, but the U.S. does not require labeling.

The following information is a great way you can share with others who are in disbelief about the dangers of pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified foods:

The No GMO Challenge

Take the Challenge: No GMOs for 30 Days!

Happy Earth Day everybody, and welcome to the first day of the No GMO Challenge!

We’re thrilled to kick this off and looking forward to meeting everyone who joins the No GMO Challenge. This is a 30 day challenge to avoid all foods with GMOs. It’s a rolling challenge — you can join in anytime. You can also participate as long as you like. You don’t have to stop at 30 days.

What are GMOs?

GMOs - short for genetically modified organisms - are man-made organisms created in a laboratory and patented by a corporation or the USDA. GMOs are created by a process called genetic engineering.

GMOs are, hands down, the greatest environmental threat to our planet.

A bill on GMO-labelling was voted down in Canadian Parliament last year, unfortunately. There are some good links in this article about it and non-GM foods, too.
......................

Bill on Labelling GMOs in Canada Voted Down
http://www.celsias.com/article/bill-...da-voted-down/

In a vote held on May 5 [2008], Canadian parliament defeated Bill C-517, the private member's bill tabled by MP Gilles-A. Perron in April, calling on implementation of mandatory labelling of GMO food.

During Monday's second debate (full text, several Members of Parliament talked about food safety, precautionary measures and, of course, democracy. Said Perron, in closing, "when 83% of people are in favour, what should we do? We should listen to our constituents and say yes to mandatory labelling for genetically modified foods."

But this dedication to that good, old-fashioned democratic spirit was not enough to trump those against, some of whom toted corporate interest and misinformation in their arguments. MP Wayne Easter from Prince Edward Island stated that genetic modification "happens in … natural breeding" before turning to complaints issued by several organizations. These included the Canadian Seed Trade Association, which counts representatives from Monsanto and Bayer Crop Science among their directors, CropLife Canada, a subsidiary of CropLife International, which is a federation of major players in the plant science industry, including Monsanto, CropScience and Dupont, and Food and Consumer Products of Canada, an association representing the food and consumer products industry, including, yep, Monsanto and Dow Agrosciences. In a letter, quoted by Easter, Maple Leaf Foods (which uses GMOs) and others stated: "this bill will impose hundreds of millions of dollars of unnecessary cost to the agri-food industry without providing any benefit to Canadian consumers."

It seems that in the Canadian House of Commons, the benefits that count are those reaped by multinational corporations.

For the rest of us, however, there is a path around the steadily increasing takeover of our food system. Beyond buying your produce from farmers' markets, you can also check out the info found in our recent interview on The Celsias Show ['They Stood Up To Monsanto and Won' in Montville, Maine]. In the interview, Jeffrey Smith, head of the Institute for Responsible Technology and author of Seeds of Deception and Genetic Roulette, gives plenty of encouraging info on his fantastic work, and what you can do to not only protect yourself and your family, but also contribute to the growing movement against the genetic tampering of our food. Amongst other things, sign up to Jeffrey's Newsletter, browse their 'Take Action' section, and be sure to download and distribute their new GMO Defensive Shopping List ['Are You One of the 9 In 10 Americans Opposed To Unlabeled GM Foods? (PDF 4pp)].

Greenpeace also has an excellent guide, specifically for Canadian residents ['How To Avoid Genetically Engineered Food (PDF 13pp)].
