Audit the Federal Reserve.

The Federal Reserve's recent and unprecedented actions in the realm of monetary policy have provoked a backlash among the American people. Trillions of dollars worth of loans and guarantees have been provided to Wall Street firms, while Main Street Americans suffocate under harsh taxation, the prospect of higher debt levels and increasing inflation. These events have awakened many Americans to problems with the Fed's loose monetary policy, the bubbles it has created in the past and the potential hyperinflation it might cause in the future.

One of the fallacies of modern economics is the idea that a central bank is required in order to keep inflation low and promote economic growth. In reality, it is the central bank's monetary policy that causes inflation and depresses economic growth...

Hermain Cain claims the Federal Reserve is "Squeaky Clean"

Posted by Fjhaddad1 on 05/22/09 10:26 PM

I got the chance to ask a question about auditing the Federal Reserve at Herman Cain's live radio show broadcasting at the Marietta Square. Herman Cain claims the Federal Reserve is "squeaky clean" and claims Chris Dodd and Barney Frank do not want the public to know about this....

I dunno, I can't help but smell a rat with this whole Hr 1207 business.
Is it simply a way to quell the masses that are awakening so they think everything will be fine?
Who's gonna be the ones auditing? No one honest of that I'm sure.
Are they still going to charge tax on income? aka slavery.
It's just a big game show, reality TV at its finest (or worst).
Time to move beyond the whole show, as its all corrupt, no truth comes from Washington anymore.

You can't fix whats broken and you can't break whats real.

Top 40 Countdown: Members of Congress Likely to Co-Sponsor HR1207 That Haven't Yet

Posted by WyseDome on 05/31/09 02:15 AM

Quote:
Wow, what a long title for a blog. But hey, I couldn't think of a way to shorten it. Anyway, with Dr. Paul and the 179 co-sponsors, we only need 38 more members of Congress to co-sponsor the bill to actually have a majority of House members supporting it. Thus, in classic Casey Kasem form, I have decided to name the Top 40 members of Congress we should concentrate on trying to convince to co-sponsor the bill. Well, actually, this will not be in any particular order, and thus... its nothing like Casey Kasem's Top 40 countdown at all. But hey, it was a catchy title. The criteria used to select these 40 House members was voting record, geographic location of their district, and level of Campaign For Liberty presence in their district (as determined by number of members registered in the district). For those of us whose representative has already co-sponsored, this is yet another way we can help make progress toward getting a vote on the bill. So, without further ado...

THE TOP 40 MEMBERS OF CONGRESS LIKELY TO SUPPORT HR 1207 THAT HAVEN'T ALREADY DONE SO!

Jared Polis- D (CO 2)
Betsy Markey- D (CO 4)
Mike Coffman- R (CO 6)
Bill Young- R (FL 10)
Suzanne Kosmas- D (FL 24)
John Lewis- D (GA 5)
David Loebsack- D (IA 2)
Leonard Boswell- D (IA 3)
Dennis Moore- D (KS 3)
John Yarmuth- D (KY 3)
John Tierney- D (MA 6)
Bart Stupak- D (MI 1)
Betty McCollum- D (MN 4)
Keith Ellison- D (MN 5)
Jim Oberstar- D (MN 8)
William Lacy Clay Jr.- D (MO 1)
Jo Ann Emerson- R (MO 8)
Dina Titus- D (NV 3)
Carol Shea-Porter- D (NH 1)
Paul Hodes- D (NH 2)
Maurice Hinchey- D (NY 22)
David Price- D (NC 4)
Heath Shuler- D (NC 11)
Earl Pomeroy- D (ND)
Dennis Kucinich- D (OH 10)
John Sullivan- R (OK 1)
David Wu- D (OR 1)
Jim Cooper- D (TN 5)
Bart Gordon- D (TN 6)
Chet Edwards- D (TX 17)
Jim Matheson- D (UT 2)
Jim Moran- D (VA 8)
Rick Larsen- D (WA 2)
Brian Baird- D (WA 3)
Norm Dicks- D (WA 6)
Alan Mollohan- D (WV 1)
Nick Rahall- D (WV 3)
Ron Kind- D (WI 3)
Gwen Moore- D (WI 4)
Dave Obey- D (WI 7)

Remember, if you choose to contact these members, emphasize what beliefs we hold in common. There are MAYBE 3 or 4 members of Congress that vote strictly based on the Constitution, and they've all already co-sponsored. So, bringing up all the votes that you disagree with or feel are in violation of the Constitution doesn't really help our cause. Besides, there will be plenty of time to confront congresspeople on these issues in the future. As for now, be polite and enthusiastic. We are so close to making history!

(I will update this blog later with contact info for each member of Congress listed)

HR 1207 ~ 182 Co-sponsors and Counting

Posted by Justin Kapacinskas on 06/03/09 08:21 AM

I just checked thomas.gov and HR 1207 is now up to 182 co-sponsors, including Rep. Peter Roskam representing the 6th Congressional District of Illinois. However, Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson (IL-11) is still not yet listed, so we can expect the number of co-sponsors to increase in the near future, since she has also decided to co-sponsor this important legislation.

Now is the time to get fired-up and continue to build momentum for HR 1207 here in Illinois. Myself and a few others have been working on a project to petition for HR 1207 in the Congressional Districts of Illinois http://www.campaignforliberty.com/blog.php?view=19079 where, for largely nondescript reasons, the representatives in those districts have chosen to not cosponsor this common-sense measure.

Here is a list of representatives in Illinois who yet require a gentle reminder that transparency and accountability for the institution that sets monetary policy affecting the entire economy should not be optional. You just might be inclined to give their offices a call and/or send them an email or a hand-written letter and inquire as to their position on HR 1207 and transparency for the Fed.

Congresswoman Bean (IL-8, House Financial Services Committee)
Congressman Foster (IL-14, House Financial Services Committee)
Congressman Kirk (IL-10)
Congressman Quigley (IL-5)
Congressman Gutierrez (IL-4, House Financial Services Committee)
Congressman Davis (IL-7)
Congressman Rush (IL-1)
Congressman Lipinski (IL-3)
Congressman Jackson (IL-2)
Congressman Costello (IL-12)

HR1207 Federal Reserve Transparency Act 2009

Posted by JennyBrown on 06/03/09 10:45 AM

In honor of this bill now reaching 182 co-sponsors. I have hosted on line a petition and fact sheet to make it easy for you to encourage your congressman to become a cosponsor of Federal Reserve Transparency Act 2009. All you have to do is print both forms out, take them with you where ever you go, get signatures while educating people, send them to your congressman. When they see how many people we are reaching they will become co-sponsors. Click on the highlights to take you to the fact sheet, and the Audit the Federal Reserve petition. Let's get some signatures! If everyone gets at least 10 signatures, and we have over 100,000 members we would flood their offices with 1,000,000 signatures. We can do this and make a difference!

The Latest Obstruction to Fed Transparency

Posted by Anthony Gregory on 06/04/09 10:00 AM

Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa (R) tries to put some language into a bill on housing, language that would allow the GAO to somewhat substantially audit the Fed's operations that have transpired in response to the financial crisis. According to Grassley, fellow Republican Richard Shelby of Alabama watered down http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/0..._n_200515.html
the language, so as to protect Fed secrecy.

Our Efforts Are Working, The Fed Is Scared

Posted by Anthony Gregory on 06/07/09 8:45 PM

The Federal Reserve plans to hire a lobbyist to polish its public image.
Fed Intends to Hire Lobbyist in Campaign to Buttress Its Image http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...ci1AM&refer=us

Excerpts:

“People have been asking whether the Fed is capable of getting its job done right,” said Lynn Turner, a former chief accountant at the Securities and Exchange Commission. “Hiring a former lobbyist from Enron will surely make one wonder.”

One YouTube clip, of Florida Democratic Representative Alan Grayson’s grilling of Inspector General Elizabeth Coleman, has garnered almost 500,000 views in about a month. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXlxB...layer_embedded Posted in Avalon at:http://projectavalon.net/forum/showt...t=alan+grayson
This is quite significant. A few years ago, and for nearly a century before that, the Fed had no fear of a bad image in public opinion, since the public by and large saw the Fed as mysterious, obscure, and esoteric. Only recently, thanks to Ron Paul, the Campaign for Liberty, the work on HR 1207 and the work of so many others and their activism and education, the Fed has become a public issue. Yes, the financial crisis brought it to the forefront, but in the past the central bank was rarely this vulnerable to public disconent, even during crisis.

It is a triumph that the Fed is now subject to widespread and significant criticism. It is a triumph that we have them scared.

Thanks to Adam de Angeli for the link.

Congressman Moran (D-VA) said "Bernanke is worried about an audit of the money supply"

Posted by AlexanderVA on 06/09/09 10:40 AM

On Saturday, a Campaign for Liberty member and I attended the Armenian Festival in Old Town Alexandria on Saturday, June 6th to hand out flyers regarding H.R. 1207.

At the festival, Congressman Moran gave remarks regarding the festival. After he finished, we rushed up to him to ask for his cosponsorship of H.R. 1207.

Congressman Moran replied how he met with Bernanke on friday, June 5th regarding an Audit of the Federal Reserve. Moran told us that "Bernanke is worried about an audit of the money supply". He did not indicate his cosponsorship, but the fact that two constituents asked him gave pressure.

I hope everyone in Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, Reston continue to put pressure onto Moran to cosponsor H.R. 1207.

Fed Said to Retreat From Seeking Debt-Issuing Power

June 9 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve has backed off from seeking a new tool to forestall inflation, refraining from asking Congress for the power to issue its own debt, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Putting off the issue may avoid a political clash over whether the Fed should begin winding down its emergency lending programs while unemployment remains elevated. The central bank intends to rely instead on paying interest on banks’ reserve deposits to prevent a flood of cash into the economy.

Audit the Fed Bill Reaches Crucial Benchmark

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Ron Paul's Federal Reserve Transparency Act, HR 1207, has reached and surpassed the level of 218 cosponsors in the House of Representatives, which means it is now cosponsored by a majority of the members.

The 218th cosponsor was Dennis Kucinich (OH-10), and the bill has since received its 222nd cosponsor.

“The tremendous grass-roots and bipartisan support in Congress for HR 1207 is an indicator of how mainstream America is fed up with Fed secrecy,” said Congressman Paul. “I look forward to this issue receiving greater public exposure.”

Hearings on Federal Reserve transparency are expected within the next month, as part of the Financial Services Committee's series of hearings on regulatory reform. http://www.house.gov/apps/list/press...ul/audit.shtml

More Great News - DeMint cosponsors S 604!

Posted by Jesse Benton on 06/11/09 9:24 PM

After we broke through the 218 co-sponsor threshold on H.R. 1207, I didn't think today could get any better. However, we have even more news.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) today became the first co-sponsor of S 604, H.R. 1207's companion legislation. We still have a long way to go before we pass real legislation to Audit the Fed, but this is yet another major step toward our ultimate goal.

Sen. DeMint is highly respected and one of the most principled conservatives in Washington. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), 604's lead sponsor, is a firebrand Independent progressive. To see these two guys on a bill together has to tell you that something special is going on.

Important Information Regarding HR 1207

Posted by John Tate on 06/12/09

As you've no doubt heard by now, Ron Paul's Audit the Fed Bill (H.R. 1207) has now passed 218 co-sponsors, giving this vital reform the support of a majority on the U.S. House.

That's the good news. But here's the rest of the story.

I've seen a lot of well-intentioned news stories and posts over the last 24 hours incorrectly noting that this means it is out of Committee, on the House floor, or worse, assured of passage.

Please note that none of this is true - yet.

There is still MUCH work to be done, even in the House. You and I both know that the Fed and its allies will stop at nothing to hold onto their power. And there are a lot of tricks people can use even at this stage of the battle.

So please know - there's a long way to go, but thanks to you, we're getting closer every day to passing Audit the Fed!

The next step is hearings and a vote in the House Financial Services Committee. This has not been scheduled yet. After that the House can consider the bill.

We're optimistic with its bipartisan support in the House, that the Audit the Fed bill will proceed through Committee and to the House floor in the near future. And rest assured, Campaign for Liberty and Ron Paul are prepared to keep up the pressure - and use any available means - to pass Audit the Fed through the House.

More on this in the future, but for now, KEEP UP THE PRESSURE!

From Senator Jim DeMint's Facebook: Will the Federal Reserve Be Audited?

Posted by MattJarfi on 06/16/09 11:56 AM

This came straight from Senator Jim DeMint's Facebook!!! What a true champ!

Will the Federal Reserve Be Audited?

It will come as a surprise to many Americans to know: 1) the Federal Reserve is not part of the U.S. government, but is a private organization; and 2) it has never been audited. But more than half of the members of the U.S. House of Representatives have become cosponsors of Congressman Ron Paul's bill to audit the Fed, and similar legislation has been introduced in the Senate.

Enacted in 1913, the Fed began issuing currency in 1914. All U.S. currency today is Federal Reserve currency. The last U.S. Treasury-issued dollars backed by precious metal carried the date 1968. Since then, the value of all dollars has steadily evaporated due to inflation. All value will soon disappear completely if the process under which the Fed is permitted to print vast quantities of new money isn't terminated.

As an important first step in exposing what the Fed has been doing for almost 100 years, Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas) introduced the Federal Reserve Transparency Act on February 26. Known more popularly as the "Audit the Fed bill," H.R. 1207 has already garnered 224 co-sponsors, more than half of the 435 House members. This remarkable achievement could not have occurred without the congressman's valiant run for the GOP nomination that awakened millions. He has been warning that the nation would suffer an economic meltdown for many years. Moreover, the recession that has already harmed so many has generated widespread demand for examining the Fed's books.

In a recent message appearing on YouTube, Rep. Paul pointed out that, while more than half of the House membership has now co-sponsored the bill, an even more important plateau of support would be 290, the number of backers that would negate the potential for blocking the bill through a parliamentary procedure known as suspension of the rules. In other words, he urges continued effort to gain more co-sponsors.

Over in the Senate, a companion measure has been introduced. S. 604 also calls for auditing the Fed and needs its own co-sponsors. To date, the bill's author, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), has been joined by only one co-sponsor, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.).

Now that there is such large and growing support for an overall audit of everything the Fed does, Congressman Paul believes that the Fed's authorities and its government supporters who will be under the gun "will come down real hard" to block what the bill seeks to accomplish. But, he says, "Support so far amounts to a major political and moral victory. If the Fed's supporters don't allow this bill to pass, they will prove our point that they are hiding important information that the American people want to see." He also believes any attempt to thwart the purpose of H.R. 1207 will increase demand for the Fed to be audited.

The congressman is correct. Major progress toward achieving long-overdue transparency of the nation's unconstitutional money manager has already been made.

Targeted Senate List for S 604 (HR 1207 companion bill in the Senate)

Posted by georges on 06/16/09 10:59 AM

Pasted below is a list of the entire Senate with phone numbers. This list is grouped as follows:

All senators that are both (1)up for election this cycle and (2)are also on the banking committee ( Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs )
All senators that are on the banking committee
All senators that are up for election this cycle
The rest of the scoundrels, er, I mean senators
By categorizing the list this way, I hope that those senators most closely connected with the bill and those most sensitive to our concerns (because of election concerns) will hear from us first and the most.

Some may hesitate to call if they do not know what to say, so may I suggest something like the following canvass. I might say...

for committee members...

Hi. I am George Schumpf and I am calling from Idaho. I am a non-constituent, but I am calling because Senator whoever is on the banking committee. I am calling to support S. 604, the Federal Reserve Sunshine Act of 2009. I would like to urge the senator to co-sponsor this bill and support this important bill when it comes up in committee.

for non-committee members...

Hi. I am George Schumpf and I am calling from Idaho. I am a non-constituent, but I am calling to support S. 604, the Federal Reserve Sunshine Act of 2009. I would like to urge Senator whoever to co-sponsor and support this important bill.

Let's get ready to pressure the Senate even more than the House, because THEY WILL NEED MORE PRESSURE. This is a critical opportunity to make a real difference in the battle for our country, our economy and for liberty. Let's not let our really great effort in the House fail in the Senate because we ran out of steam. Please commit, if possible, to work down through this whole list. Please respond to the anonomous survey question to reflect your commitment. Thank you for your help.

George Schumpf

Pelosi, 1207, and Fed Secrecy

Posted by Matt Hawes on 06/18/09 7:21 PM

In his latest piece, The Huffington Post's Ryan Grim again covers HR 1207 and reports on recent statements on Fed transparency by House Speaker Pelosi:

The Ron Paul-sponsored bill to audit the Fed picked up another dozen cosponsors over the last several days, with Rep. Louis Slaughter (D-N.Y.), chair of the Rules Committee, marking the 234th signer -- 16 more than needed for passage -- and the 67th Democrat.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) reflected on the growing anxiety people feel about the Fed at her weekly news conference Thursday....

"Many of us were, shall we say, if not surprised, taken aback when the Fed had $80 billion to invest -- to put into AIG just out of the blue. All of a sudden we wake up one morning and AIG has received $80 billion from the Fed," she said. "So of course we're saying, Where's this money come from? 'Oh, we have it. And not only that, we have more.'...

Pelosi, while sympathetic to Paul's bill, added that she wasn't familiar with the details. Paul said he'd take care of that.

"I might catch her up to date," said Paul, smiling and heading back on to the House floor to look for the speaker.

Lead Story on Politico.com: "Hill Wants Reins on Fed"

Posted by Matt Hawes on 06/19/09

Glenn Thrush and John Bresnahan report:

"If you think about the power that the Federal Reserve has at this particular moment in history, it's incredible," said Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.).

Baldwin is a bellwether, one of 66 Democrats - and 232 members overall - to co-sponsor a bill mandating audits of the Federal Reserve System for the first time in its nearly 100-year history....The bill has succeeded in melding the extreme margins of both parties as few proposals have - uniting anti-Big Government Republicans like Paul with anti-Big Business Democrats like Reps. Lynn Woolsey of California and Dennis Kucinich of Ohio....

I love how with a bill such as this trying to go through, part of Obama's new economic plan is to give the Fed MORE power over banks. Unbelievable.
