Cities and States Plan Strange New Taxes on Pretty Much Everything
Cities and States Plan Strange New Taxes on Pretty Much Everything
The government is having a hard time making do with the meager trillions you're throwing their way, so they're pressing some controversial new customs to buy their way out. Here's a look at some of the more egregious new taxes you're sure to be seeing soon. By Joseph Abrams FOXNews.com Tuesday, March 31, 2009 Behold, America: the taxman cometh. Even as taxpayers are struggling to make ends meet in a crumbling, tumbling economy, your friendly neighborhood (and state and federal) government is having a hard time making do with the meager trillions you're throwing its way, so it's relying on an old maxim: If it exists, it can be taxed. New York's resident grinch, Gov. David Paterson, tried suggesting a kind of omnibus fun-busting budget that would have taxed New Yorkers for skiing, golfing, camping, being fat, being skinny, going to the movies, going to plays, wearing clothing, going to strip clubs and having more than six fingers or toes. The governor, who is up for re-election next year, came to his senses about three weeks ago and renounced the budget, perhaps when an adviser noted that political contributions aren't tax-deductible. Things haven't been all downhill for the taxman, though: some surprising new tariffs, like supersizing the tax on AIG bonuses, have had a measure of popular support, but most are being opposed hand and foot over wallet. Cigarette taxes are jumping so much on April 1 that it will soon be cheaper to run a tobacco farm than to buy a pack of cigarettes. So as you stockpile your smokes for the coming decade, here's a look at some of the more egregious new taxes you'll be seeing soon. Re: Cities and States Plan Strange New Taxes on Pretty Much Everything
Ditto Brook,
Yep, those new taxes will pretty much gobble up 'our' economic stimulus. AND THEN THERE'S THE DEFLATION OF SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS. Recession Hits Social Security Increases by Stephen Ohlemacher Thursday, April 2, 2009 Budget experts predict NO Social Security cost-of-living increases for 3 years The recession is projected to wipe out annual cost-of-living increases for 50 million Social Security beneficiaries for the next three years, something that hasn't happened since automatic adjustments were adopted in 1975. The Congressional Budget Office says in its latest budget estimates that inflation will dip so low that Social Security recipients will not qualify for annual increases in 2010, or for two years after that. In 2013 through 2019 -- when projections are less reliable -- CBO estimates annual increases of 2 percent each year, which would be among the lowest. More States Look to Raise Taxes
More States Look to Raise Taxes
APRIL 9, 2009 By LESLIE EATON A free fall in tax revenue is driving more state lawmakers to turn to broad-based tax increases in a bid to close widening budget gaps. At least 10 states are considering some kind of major increase in sales or income taxes: Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin. California and New York lawmakers already have agreed on multibillion-dollar tax increases that went into effect earlier this year. Fiscal experts say more states are likely to try to raise tax revenue in coming months, especially once they tally the latest shortfalls from April 15 income-tax filings, often the biggest single source of funds for the 43 states that levy them. Re: Cities and States Plan Strange New Taxes on Pretty Much Everything
Yep, doesn't surprise me. We've had an increase of a half a percent in sales taxes, I think. Everyone keeps wanting the feds to stop taxing us, but the end result is that we pay it somewhere else, because those people are no longer getting money from the feds. I'd love to think that the black projects are no longer being funded, but somehow I'm not optimistic....

Re: Cities and States Plan Strange New Taxes on Pretty Much Everything
In a recession, sales taxes should if common sense prevails, go down. The less some thing costs, the more willing people are to spare some of their budget in order to purchase it.
Make this tax go too high, and people will stop buying what ever you just raised the tax on. So in short, instead of having the 15% sales tax and the item being sold, the retailer is left holding an unsold item and the tax man recieves 0% of fresh all nothing because he taxed it out of peoples reach. Fools, or, they are very wise. Think about it. |

Is it just me are is anyone else realize that while social security benefits are being lower for the serfs they make no adjustment on their benefits they receive when they leave public office . I think we are going to find this will be consistent across the board with all governments around the globe

Things are slowly dropping into place. |

Exactly, at minute 7:20 of this video series (Part 1) Rand Paul (son of Ron Paul) comments on that exactly. When you reduce tax rates, revenue usually goes up. Dr. Rand Paul spoke 4/7/2009 at WKU on what it truly means to believe in limited government. Video posted 4/8/2009: http://www.campaignforliberty.com/bl...cpg=1#comments Looks like my state is planning on raising the sales tax 1% on existing taxable items, not to mention the other items they intend on taxing. Re: Cities and States Plan Strange New Taxes on Pretty Much Everything
Hi Brook,
Have you heard if you will have charges (a new tax) for calling 9/11 in your city? PaL Tracy Residents Now Have To Pay For 911 Calls Feb 18, 2010 TRACY, Calif. (CBS13) ― Tracy residents will now have to pay every time they call 9-1-1 for a medical emergency. But there are a couple of options. Residents can pay a $48 voluntary fee for the year which allows them to call 9-1-1 as many times as necessary. Or, there's the option of not signing up for the annual fee. Instead, they will be charged $300 if they make a call for help. "A $300 fee and you don't even want to be thinking about that when somebody is in need of assistance," said Tracy resident Greg Bidlack. Residents will soon receive the form in the mail where they'll be able to make their selection. No date has been set for when the charges will go into effect. Re: Cities and States Plan Strange New Taxes on Pretty Much Everything
More slavery on the horizon???
U.S. Deficit: Higher Taxes Needed to Cut Rising Debt By ERIK HEINRICH – Wed Mar 3 Never mind about mortgaging the future. By running up a monster deficit as it struggles to keep the economy growing, the Obama Administration is setting the stage for sharply higher taxes down the road. Of course, it's not an absolute certainty. The easier option is even more quantitative easing - a euphemism for printing money, which is a dirty phrase economists never like to use. This would devalue the country's currency and sovereign debt, triggering a cycle of hyperinflation of the likes the U.S. has never seen. Hiking taxes is the less traumatic course, though it will only be accepted as the cost of inaction rises. "Congress only responds to financial crisis or some other external shock," says Bill Gale, co-director of the Tax Policy Center in Washington, D.C. "Nothing will be done in Obama's first term to substantially increase tax revenue." (See the top 10 bankruptcies.) Higher taxes are coming soon, however - and they will hurt. By some estimates, the tax burden on Americans could double before the end of this decade. The only question is: What form will these new taxes take? U.S. Sales Tax Rates Hit Record High
by William P. Barrett Monday, March 8, 2010 provided by Forbes Shopping blues: Top tax 12%. Chicago's 10.25% highest big-city rate. More Internet tax fights loom. While President Obama's push to raise federal income taxes for the wealthy gets lots of attention, the continuing upward creep in the sales tax rates imposed by state and local governments has gotten less notice. But Vertex Inc., which calculates sales tax for Internet sellers, reports that the average general sales tax rate nationwide reached 8.629% at the end of 2009, the highest since the Berwyn, Pa., company started tracking data in 1982. That was up a nickel on a taxable $100 purchase from a year earlier and up nearly 40 cents for the decade. The highest sales tax rate in the country now stands at 12%. ABOVE POST IS NEW TOO TODAY 3/10/2010
Easing into what you, as a slave, are allowed to eat... Tax soda, pizza to cut obesity, researchers say By Julie Steenhuysen – Mon Mar 8, 5:00 pm ET CHICAGO (Reuters) – U.S. researchers estimate that an 18 percent tax on pizza and soda can push down U.S. adults' calorie intake enough to lower their average weight by 5 pounds (2 kg) per year. The researchers, writing in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine on Monday, suggested taxing could be used as a weapon in the fight against obesity, which costs the United States an estimated $147 billion a year in health costs. "While such policies will not solve the obesity epidemic in its entirety and may face considerable opposition from food manufacturers and sellers, they could prove an important strategy to address overconsumption, help reduce energy intake and potentially aid in weight loss and reduced rates of diabetes among U.S. adults," wrote the team led by Kiyah Duffey of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
