Re: Latest news on al-jazeera.
Here's another article on the situation.....CRAWFORD, Texas – The U.S. on Saturday blamed the militant group Hamas for breaking a cease-fire and attacking Israel, which retaliated with strikes of its own during what became the single bloodiest day of fighting in years.
The White House called for the cease-fire to be restored, yet there were few indications that the violence, which has left more than 200 people dead and nearly another 400 wounded, was waning. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned that the operation in Gaza would widen if necessary. It was "completely unacceptable" for Hamas, which controls Gaza, to launch attacks on Israel after a truce lasting several months, said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council. "These people are nothing but thugs, so Israel is going to defend its people against terrorists like Hamas that indiscriminately kill their own people," Johndroe said in Texas as President George W. Bush was spending the week before New Year's at his ranch here. "They need to stop. We have said in the past that they have a choice to make. You can't have one foot in politics and one foot in terror." President-elect Barack Obama was receiving an intelligence briefing on Saturday from various security agencies, Johndroe said. Bush has spoken to regional leaders and the administration will remain in close contact, he said. For the rest of the article http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081228/..._wh/us_mideast |

Re: Latest news on al-jazeera.
It's all so blatant and transparent this Gaza affair and downright outrageous!Zionist control of the world and a preservation of Israel at whatever cost to any other nation.Israel want U.S. to bomb Iran-just evil, warmongering all the time-i'm very tired with all of this-non stop violence; there's nothing civilised about killing and maiming no matter how much the press try to convince me it's right.

Re: Latest news on al-jazeera.
Strangely enough missiles launched by hamas haven't caused any serious damage or casualties. What does it mean? Who is behind Hamas? To me it is a well planned intrigue to lead to a more serious conflict.

Re: Latest news on al-jazeera.
I remember a similar situation a year or so ago- a Palestinian group started firing rockets into Israel and the Israelis responded with air power and killed a lot of people.
The media and politicians took the same stance then. They neglected to mention the Isreali warship that had been shelling Palestinian beaches in the days before the rocket attacks. They must have decided it wasn't newsworthy. It's funny really, a similar pattern surrounded the orginal Iraq war. The first thing we heard was that Saddam had invaded poor innocent Kuwait, so being the paragons of virtue we are we saddled up and bombed Iraq back to the stone age. Somehow the media never mentioned that the US had sold Kuwait something called (paraphrasing) Slant Drilling technology, which had allowed them to sink oil wells into Iraqi oil fields from their side of the border. I had a couple of friends who had joined the Army at the time too, and one of them brought home a classified Army briefing document. It portrayed Saddam as a kind of Hitler figure (which to be fair he probably was) yet also failed to mention the oil issue. Funny that. |

Re: Latest news on al-jazeera.
A problem has been made-ther's been a reaction now this guy will provide some sort of 'solution'-here:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...a-1214830.html Gaza violence pushes Middle East to top of Obama's agenda By Stephen Foley in New York Sunday, 28 December 2008 Related Articles Israel pounds Gaza for second day Inside Gaza: 'The hospital morgues were already full. The dead were piled on top of each other outside' Leading article: Gaza: the cycle can be broken Israeli air strikes kill 200 and leave 700 injured Print Email Search Search Go Independent.co.uk Web Bookmark & Share Digg It del.icio.us What are these? Change font size: A | A | A The violence in Gaza adds a new foreign policy crisis to the top of the political agenda for Barack Obama and his incoming Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and dashes hopes for easy, early progress in the Middle East peace process. Mr Obama declined to comment on the situation today, sticking to the formula that the “the US has only one president at a time”, but he was being briefed on developments. The incoming administration now faces the prospect of having to help shore up a short-term security solution, instead of focusing on the long-term peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians that was promised during the election campaign. The issue will be particularly delicate for Mr Obama, who faced considerable scepticism in the Jewish community in the US ahead of his election about his commitment to Israel. In a bid to win them over, he travelled to the country in July to insist that Israeli government had an obligation to defend its citizens. "If somebody was sending rockets into my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I'm going to do everything in my power to stop that,” he said on that visit. “The state of Israel faces determined enemies who seek its destruction, but it also has a friend and ally in the United States that will always stand by the people of Israel.” Underlining his point, he held a press conference next to a collection of spent rockets in Sderot, the Israeli town near the Gaza border, which has been a frequent target of rocket attacks from Hamas militants. Today as the Israeli military pounded targets in Gaza for a second day, Mr Obama’s key strategist David Axelrod, appeared on political talk show Meet The Press and reminded viewers about the president-elect’s visit to Sderot. “This is a very serious situation,” Mr Axelrod said, “and we will consult Secretary Rice, the president and the administration on that, and be ready to take over on 20 January... But we have said repeatedly that there is only one president at a time and President Bush speaks for US until 20 January.” George Bush's late-game efforts to sponsor talks between Israel and moderate Palestinian leaders this year had until recently appeared to have prevented relations from backsliding. Upcoming elections in Israel mean Mr Obama will have to start afresh, however, and analysts believe the task has now been further complicated by the new Israeli offensive. "This takes the already slim chance of an early, active and successful Obama engagement on Israel-Palestinian peace and lowers it to about zero," Aaron David Miller, a Middle East scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars, told the Washington Post. A less gloomy view was expressed by some White House insiders yesterday, who said that Israel may have timed its offensive to be over before the new administration gets in. That would avoid a confrontation in the early days of the Obama presidency and weaken Hamas in advance of what could be renewed American pressure for restraint, concessions and meaningful progress in the peace progress. Mrs Clinton has long taken a hard line against Hamas, describing them as a terrorist organisation whose administration in Gaza cannot be recognised until it renounces violence and recognises Israel’s right to exist. She has also spoken out against the International Court of Justice when it questioned the security fence Israel has built along its border. Mrs Clinton is planning to reinstate the practice, from her husband’s administration, of appointing envoys to certain troubled countries or regions, and has begun considering a high-profile envoy to the Middle East to kickstart the peace process. Dennis Ross, Bill Clinton’s Arab-Israeli negotiator, is among the names being mentioned in Washington, along with former assistant Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke and Martin Indyk, a former US ambassador to Israel. |
