ego could be defined as whatever covers up basic goodness ...
from an experiential point of view ...
what is ego covering up?

it's covering up our experience of just being here ...
just fully being where we are ...
so that we can relate with the immediacy ...
of our experience ...

Thanks futureyes.
Yes every word carries baggage a history.
It is almost impossible to see anything fresh and new as it really is.
The ego needs past to exist.

When I did therapy I would ask some clients what the word dog meant to them.
Just one word---dog.
To some it brought up a strong fear reaction.
Others love. followed by Rover stories.
and a few were indifferent,
So you can see the difficulty in communicating with the other.
There is a quote. "Hell is the other"
So often we are sure we are expressing clearly only to find our intention etc is being mis-understood.
In order to have a clear understanding of the content of a communication, the context must be clear, that is what gives meaning to content.
The ego loves to miss-understand and be quarrelsome.
In relationships a common ego statement is.
"But you promised." normal implying. You promised to make me happy and you dident.
or "You said."
Eckhart Tolle wrote in "The Power of Now"
"Relationships are not there to make you happy at this time but to dissolve your ego. You will learn more from three failed relationships than three years spent on a dessert Island" The context being that you are looking for spiritual growth.
Namaste

Smile Re: The ego what is it? How to transcend?

you make me smile chris ...
your words always have ...
see

to not be mis-understood ...
is to take responsibility ... and ownership ...
of the words we communicate to others ...
BEfore ... they are spoken ... or written ...

as they say ... think before you speak ...

it is a process isn't it ...
to realize ... how precious our communication really is ...

what we convey ... extends ... and ripples ...
beyond ... the receiver ...

the ego ... would rather ... we not utilize our words wisely ...
this i feel ... is happening much too fluently ...
within our world ...

it is a process ... for certain ...

egolessness ... is a state of mind ...
which has complete confidence ...
in the sacredness of this world ...

it is unconditional well being ...
unconditional joy ...
that of which includes all the different qualities ...
of our experiences ...

I AM ...
still smiling ...

let there be less ego ... less fear ...
and greater joy ... and love ...
for all ...

afterall ... LOVE IS ...
beyond ego ...

IM SMILING TOO ---BIG TIME.

Thanks futureyes.
I will really miss posting here.
So many though provoking responses.
Far better than provoking ones
Not that there were any of those.
Even a small start on transcending the ego can bring much peace.
One good way is to refrain from labeling.
If you do you are not really seeing anything other than a category.
For example if your are looking at a bird refrain from any mental comment.
The mind wants to pigeon--hole it smiling.
While the mind is processing thought it is not 100% aware of the bird at all.
Spiritually speaking you are unconscious you have lost the presence of one of Gods beautiful creatures. If you really look you will be dumb struck at the perfection of the moment.

Phew,

So....in the end what one transcends....
is the illusion that there is something to transcend.

Much wisdom here, thanks to all.

Peace

ps- Regarding words, I always liked the 'Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom
in One Letter', ('A' - Sanskrit = 'no' or 'not').
Now...those guys have got a sense of humour,
and alot of spare time.

Indeed Zenith
The key stuck for a moment?????????
Just like that.

I laugh because the thread is by the ego suggesting and asking egos for ways to speed up its demise.
Only it doesn't know that.
It thinks its going to be an enlightened ego.
I haven't the heart to tell it otherwise.
Im quite fond of christopher and the things he gets up to but I must surrender that fondness to the greater Love of God.

As to where we are aI can only answer or my self.
Im home ward bound.
Anyone know a short cut?
Think I tried them all over many life times.
Back to
Love love and then see what happens.

"All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves."

The ego loves to make all kinds of assumptions with little or no evidence.
This week began here with snow in fact Inverness was cut of for two days the roads being blocked.
Today the sun shone and it was warm enough to sit out in the garden.
Now the ego would like to relate the variances in the weather to signs of the end times, the prophecies being fulfilled.
Well the weather is the weather just doing what it does.
4 seasons in one day as the song goes.
No doubt that climate is changing, the gulf stream is slowing and that could be a precursor to an ice age. All that can be said is that there are cycles and we are in one though which one who knows.
The ego would love to make doom and gloom of it --- drama drama drama.
Or yes we are heading for ascension and all the signs are there -- different drama drama drama.
The ego finds the present moment boring --it lives on "Whats next?"
Life can only be lived NOW.
The ego totaly misses the point.
It is in acquisition mode or fear of loss.
Never content always anxious.
It wants to be a bigger stronger "me" then it will feel safe, of course enough is never enough. It may relax for a short while savoring a major or minor triumph an inquisition then the cycle repeats. Back to needing, wanting or fear of loss.
People are so driven to get no matter what.
Ambition is healthy, obsession is something else.
Being driven leads to "The end justifies the means"
Heaven help any one that stands in the way of the ego getting what it wants.
So there!!!
Thats my thought for today.
Love

April 5th

SAMADHI

Vanished the veils of light and shade,
Lifted every vapor of sorrow,
Sailed away all dawns of fleeting joy,
Gone the dim sensory mirage.
Love, hate, health, disease, life, death,
Perished these false shadows on the screen of duality.
Waves of laughter, scyllas of sarcasm, melancholic whirlpools,
Melting in the vast sea of bliss.
The storm of maya stilled
By magic wand of intuition deep.
The universe, forgotten dream, subconsciously lurks,
Ready to invade my newly wakened memory divine.
I live without the cosmic shadow,
But it is not, bereft of me;
As the sea exists without the waves,
But they breathe not without the sea.
Dreams, wakings, states of deep turiya sleep,
Present, past, future, no more for me,
But ever-present, all-flowing I, I, everywhere.
Planets, stars, stardust, earth,
Volcanic bursts of doomsday cataclysms,
Creation's molding furnace,
Glaciers of silent x-rays, burning electron floods,
Thoughts of all men, past, present, to come,
Every blade of grass, myself, mankind,
Each particle of universal dust,
Anger, greed, good, bad, salvation, lust,
I swallowed, transmuted all
Into a vast ocean of blood of my own one Being!
Smoldering joy, oft-puffed by meditation
Blinding my tearful eyes,
Burst into immortal flames of bliss,
Consumed my tears, my frame, my all.
Thou art I, I am Thou,
Knowing, Knower, Known, as One!
Tranquilled, unbroken thrill, eternally living, ever new peace!
Enjoyable beyond imagination of expectancy, samadhi bliss!
Not a mental chloroform
Or unconscious state without wilful return,
Samadhi but extends my conscious realm
Beyond the limits of the mortal frame
To farthest boundary of eternity
Where I, the Cosmic Sea,
Watch the little ego floating in me.
The sparrow, each grain of sand, fall not without my sight.
All space like an iceberg floats within my mental sea.
Colossal Container, I, of all things made.
By deeper, longer, thirsty, guru-given meditation
Comes this celestial samadhi
Mobile murmurs of atoms are heard,
The dark earth, mountains, vales, lo! molten liquid!
Flowing seas change into vapors of nebulae!
Aum blows upon the vapors, opening wondrously their veils,
Oceans stand revealed, shining electrons,
Till, at last sound of the cosmic drum,
Vanish the grosser lights into eternal rays
Of all-pervading bliss.
From joy I came, for joy I live, in sacred joy I melt.
Ocean of mind, I drink all creation's waves.
Four veils of solid, liquid, vapor, light,
Lift aright.
Myself, in everything, enters the Great Myself.
Gone forever, fitful, flickering shadows of mortal memory.
Spotless is my mental sky, below, ahead, and high above.
Eternity and I, one united ray.
A tiny bubble of laughter, I
Am become the Sea of Mirth Itself
