I guess the idea of being taken care of in Jail may not be viable.

Wadena, Minnesota jail to start charging inmates $20 per day

WADENA, Minn. - Starting next year, inmates at the Wadena County Jail will be charged $20 for every day they're housed in the jail. They'll also be responsible for any medical expenses they incur.

Wadena County Sheriff Mike Carr says the goal is to deter people who periodically land themselves in jail so they can take advantage of free services.

He says there are some people who never go to a doctor or dentist, but as soon as they get to jail they get a toothache.

The jail program is called "Pay to Stay".

It starts in January. It will rely on a collection agency to bill the inmates.

Carr says the message is, if you "can't pay for the time, don't do the crime."

Wadena is in central Minnesota, about 50 miles east of Fergus Falls.

In the ever-widening search for extra income during desperate economic times, states across America are embracing a new idea: making inmates pay their debt to society not only in hard time, but also in cold, hard cash.

In New York, Republican Assemblyman James Tedisco introduced a bill that would charge wealthy criminals $90 a day for room and board at state prisons.

(Hmmm...I wonder if Bernie is being charged!!! How do you collect from someone who is bankrupt? Which creditor would be paid first, would the jail supersede all others?)

Perhaps the county should offer these services outside of the jail.

all seem to be 'big' business too

and, idol business - and, that is 'bad' business

sports people who earn double digit millions

fans who pay more, for 4 tickets, than most people earn in a week

whatever happened to a 'simple' life ???

Always remember too that petty street crime is not a problem but a symptom of a problem, the problem of economic injustice.
The real criminals are in boardrooms not on street corners.

Most Crime and Violence could be stopped by doing biochemical profiles on all young people and then making sure if their genetics dictate that they need more of certain nutrients, that those nutrients would be provided to them.

That might help the few where nutrition deficiency is the actual cause of their behavior but good jobs and good social services will do alot more.

Yes jobs and social services are a factor, but the effect of nutritional deficiencies on behavior is surprisingly huge. Most people in jail are found to be deficient of basic nutrients. Jobs and social services cannot fix the problem of missing nutrients that lead directly to violent behavior. A combo of services would be ideal.

Lack of Basic Nutrition Creates Generation of Criminals; Prison System Society A new study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry shows that children who experience malnutrition exhibit strikingly increased behavioral disorders and aggressive behavior as they grow older. The study looked at children between the ages of eight and 17 years, and found some rather shocking statistics about their behaviors. Children who suffered certain nutritional deficiencies demonstrated a shocking 41% increase in aggression at age eight. At age 17, they demonstrated a 51% increase in violent and antisocial behaviors. And the only difference is their diet. It's all about the foods they were eating and the nutrients they were missing.

What specific nutrients were missing from their diets? Four primary nutrients were tried in the study: Zinc, iron, B vitamins and protein. Malnourished children weren't getting crucial minerals like zinc and iron, and they weren't getting the B vitamins they needed to develop healthy nervous systems. And a healthy nervous system is a prerequisite for mental and emotional health and stability.
