!!! Threadstorm !!!

Something just crossed my mind & I think I should bring it up.

Somebody has started up an unusual amount of new threads in the past 24 hours. Now, I (we) think to know who The ExChanger is - Susan, one of the few persons who's Avatar is a picture of (most presumably) herself, who's been around for a long time & who's birthday it was during that period, which means she deserves a lot of attention & can do whatever she likes.

But suppose it was someone else, not someone new, but a 'Senior Member' (members), let's call this member 'The Troll', who, out of the blue, starts posting loads & loads of fresh content.

All these new threads have a certain 'quality', but do nonetheless, come from one single source, who's name is now all over the forum. Someone who visits it for the first time, might think that 'The Troll' ownes the forum. Actually it's a crossover between a Blog & a Forum. (A BlogForum. New word? Yes? Well, in that case it's mine & mine only!)

What I want to debate is:
Should there be a limit on the amount of new threads one person may start in a 24 hour time period?
Just to avoid somebody launches a 'Threadstorm'. (Another new word & also mine, but this one I'm willing to share!)

we were asked by Gareth, to restore, all the threads,
that had xxx's through them ~ and, we have added content
to all of them ~ almost all url's had to be relooked up
and, reposted ~ one at a time

we hope you do NOT think, we enjoy doing this ???

it was decided, that it was best to do it, during the 25th-26th-27th
and, it has to be done, by hand, one post at a time,
otherwise, you get lost, where you were !!!

we keep getting emails, why is this one missing/why is that one missing

we take total responsibility-for, why they are missing

and, we are retifying it

we even got e-mails from people who said,
some pretty unpleasant things ~ because they were missing,
esp; the researchers, so, we agreed to put them back up,
many threads, have been corrected, and, NOT rised to the top

If the thread has substance, then no, there should not be a limit. If someone is just posting to get threads out...well it seems it should have some value to the fourm. Otherwise it just waists bandwidth.

We rose a lot of thread, people had asked us,
why this/or that, was missing ~ so, we are just trying
to "fill back in" what was missing ~ many threads,
are corrected, but, NOT brought forward !!!

By the looks of things,
the amount of people coming here,
is going UP

and, many people, who were talked about
on some of the threads, have been sent
invites, to post here

so, THE MORE THE MERRIER,

and, there is even TYME to LAUGH

it´s somewhat annoying to certain point, it´s nearly an spammer attitude. But... it´s nothing of my concern.


BTW, if she is talking about "we" instead of "i", keep your eyes open, there is somenthing wrong in there.

We are restoring them, ourselves

Well, thanks for the eXplanation on the "we". Glad it didn't turn out to be about royal lineage or something.

One other curiosity I do have is about how all those threads and posts came to have all those curious xxx in place of content in the first place. Does anybody know what happened to them? terrorists or something? I remember looking in one day, and noticing that every one of your posts was like that. Very upsetting.

Hi folks.

This may or may not be my place to say this (being only a new member), however I have been following Camelot since day one, and keeping an eye on Avalon since day one. I have also been researching this whole scene for a substantial amount of time before Camelot was even around, so please be assured I'm not posting this simply to rustle up negativity.

I was somewhat surprised to see this thread, as literally the previous evening I was discussing this very issue with someone, perhaps allot of people are feeling the same way or this was some personal bizzar coincidence that this thread happened start after the discussion.

Anyway, all that put aside, I do feel there is some merit to what TRANCOSO is fundamentally saying. I personally feel there is no point whatsoever in starting a new thread anymore because as soon as its posted its literally pushed back so far in the recent posts list, a very small amount of people (if any) will see it. Now I do relies a busy form is a busy forum, and if anything this is usually a good thing, however a significant number of this activity is somewhat irrelevant to what Avalon, I think, is all about. More specifically a person may post something one minute refresh their page then relies its been swallowed by new threads with questionable subject matter and content and thread bumping for no other good reason but to bump a thread.

I have also observed there seems to be an increasing culture amongst some people to get their "number of posts" as high as they can. I liken this somewhat to a social networking site like perhaps facebook, where allot of people add contacts for no other reason but to have a bigger contact list then the next person. A race pursues to keep up with other people so often folks resort to posting arbitrary things to get their post counter high. Couple this with the "ranking" system on Avalon, you can see how "some" folks might slip into a culture of what I am saying above.

So those are my own observations.

A small suggestion perhaps may be to have two "recent activity" links.. The first being a Todays Posts link, which will do what its doing now, tho a second link could be Todays new threads or Recent threads... this will be a link something similar to "todays posts" but not be effected by replies within threads, and yes perhaps it might be a thought to restrict the number of new threads someone can start in a 24/48 hour period, if anything may help people think a little more and post stuff a little more relevant and less arbitrary.


I see allot of reference to eXchanger here, and although she dose post allot, what she dose post is usually of good interest and is generally in context to events so I assure you eXchanger its not you or any other individual I'm talking about but rather a general culture, and everyone including me is susceptible to that culture. I admit I have started what seems in hindsight irrelevant to events threads.

In general Avalon is doing a great job, and I commend the admin,mods and users for making it what it is. One of the hardest if not impossible jobs in the world is keeping everyone happy in any given situation, this includes busy Internet forums, all one can hope to achieve is a balance so to the admin/mods in particular your doing a great job. And to the other members senior, regular or whatever thank you for being on the front line in keeping the forum vibrant and active.. you guys ARE the forum after all.

But all said and done, lets not get intoxicated by this whole thing


Anyway that's it really, sorry if I have spoken out of place.

The "we" of which you speak ... Susan is a name, A name, meaning it is one person
but what you write is in the "we"... If you include me, well I don't get it.

The point is that for some, there is no I. Language in common use is one of the many bars on our cage.

The next time you see a word form like that "we" that Susan uses, and it annoys you a bit (- and if I am honest, I'll admit it did me for a bit, until I realised that was silly to be annoyed by such things) - then it is worth having a dig into why.

For me it took me on a long thought vector into the Law of One.

I have just reviewed this thread - lots and lots of words ...

Was this question ever answered? Why did Susan's posts have XXX in place of what was there before?

There was some insinuation that perhaps some hack took them out?

No - Susan did all that herself. I don't know why.

Oftentimes when people get fed up with this forum, they delete all their posts on the way out the door.

This forum software has pretty good security, and that security is being updated by new patches and new versions on a consistent basis now.

A person cannot just leave the box empty - they have to leave . or XXX or whatever they choose when they remove their previous words.

However - the words in all posts that were there prior to the edits remain out of sight and can be restored.

Susan has chosen to restore the posts that she herself deleted.
