In Niemöller's first utterance of it, in a January 6, 1946 speech before representatives of the Confessing Church in Frankfurt, it went (in German):[1]

"THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,

THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

THEN THEY CAME for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.

THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

Free speech is a misnomer.
It came at a high price, it had to be paid for with the lives of many.
So it must be respected.
That which is abused is weakened and lost.
That which is respected is strengthened and wholesome .

With respect and love
