What a lovely story!!! Perhaps 'they' knew he would never leave the hospital so they said that rather than tell him he could never tell you anything.
In Spielberg's 'Taken,' I think, there is a segment where someone dies and her old friends and family walk through the walls to talk to her as she gets close to dying.
Perhaps when we die to self, we can see them without having to cross over into death. Just a thought.
