It could be that they are stepping down to save face for the company. Perhaps they were involved in illegal dealings such as manipulating stock prices, lying to investors/shareholders, or some other unsavory activity that is just about to come to light. Generally, this is what happens when the top brass is doing something illegal. That way, the new C-class team can make some statement to the tune of: we don't know exactly what the last CEO/CFO knew/did, but we're trying to make it right...
