Good thing they put a halt to that!, early x-ray tubes had such wide scatter that radiation was being spread everywhere. I worked on x-ray systems for 6 years and had to wear a badge to determine how much radiation I received. I sent the badge in once a month and got a report back telling me how much, and how deep the radiation exposure was.Early systems had very long exposure times compared to fractions of a second today. I used to play around with them sometimes though, like x-ray my hand and feet just to see what they looked like. Oh and mammography has very low dose and women need not worry a bit! I actually specialized in mammography. I did go to Miami Metro Zoo after Hurricane Andrew and watched them x-ray a snake and one of the Bengal Tigers, which was huge, in fact they wanted me there just to be sure they didn't break the x-ray table with the tiger.
