Whole wheat is great. Exchange white rice for bulgur wheat during meals. Pasta for raw rice and so on...
But mainly cutting down on carbohydrates (potatoes, rice, pasta, bread) is a good trick. Western culture incorporates to much of this as it is. Eat any meal that you enjoy but eat about 1/2 or 1/3 of the carbs. Im not trying any Atkins mumbo jumbo here, it just works for me at least.
Excersice is most important. Maximize output against input.
