You raise what I feel is an important point. It speaks to the whole concept of cognitive dissonance, and how that works. We'd go nuts if we didn't have a way of integrating information which wouldn't otherwise "fit".
If people are off looking for something or someone to believe in, they'll make it work, somehow. And the more they need or want to believe, the more they'll enable themselves to disregard evidence which would otherwise interfere with that belief.
