Well, if this is what happens when people stand up, can you imagine what a wonderful world we would have if more people had less fear!
Missouri Government Backs Down
Posted by Anthony Gregory on 03/26/09 11:30 AM
The state of Missouri has retracted the infamous militia report: This is thanks to the grassroots activists who protested and defended their rights -- a very many active members of the Campaign for Liberty as well as countless others who expressed their concern about this document.
This demonstrates one of the most important constraints on government power: public opinion. A determined minority can shape opinion and a people will retrain the government insofar as they believe strongly in freedom. On this particular invasion of the Constitution, enough voices loudly protested and enough people were outraged that the government pulled back.
Peaceful activism and efforts to change public opinion are what, in the long run, make the most difference. This is why big government often fears the ideas of liberty even more than antisocial, violent agitators.

STATE RETRACTS MILITIA REPORT
Nixon withdraws support amid growing backlash.

Jefferson City -- Gov. Jay Nixon's administration on Wednesday made an about-face on a controversial militia profiling report, retracting the document in the face of growing criticism.
Missouri Highway Patrol Superintendent James F. Keathley ordered the Missouri Information Analysis Center to "permanently cease distribution" of the Feb. 20 report, which labels fundamentalist Christians, members of third-party political movements, strict followers of the U.S. Constitution and people who oppose taxes, abortion and illegal immigration as possible members of militias.
Nixon and officials in his administration have previously defended MIAC's report, which has brought national attention to the secretive intelligence-gathering work of state fusion centers.
Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder spoke out against the report, saying it unfairly maligns "Christians, anti-abortionists and advocates for protecting our borders and supporters of certain political candidates as potential threats to the public safety."

Peaceful Dissent and Government Witch Hunts
By Anthony Gregory
Excerpt:
Quote:
Bush thundered that "you are either with us or with the terrorists." In December, 2001, Attorney General John Ashcroft lashed out at Americans concerned about civil liberties:
"To those who scare peace-loving people with phantoms of lost liberty, my message is this. Your tactics only aid terrorists, for they erode our national unity and diminish our resolve. They give ammunition to America's enemies, and pause to America's friends. They encourage people of good will to remain silent in the face of evil."

As most readers of this are probably aware, the Campaign for Liberty has been singled out, along with a few other political groups, in a leaked Missouri state government report, "The Modern Militia Movement." The document tells state officials to be on the lookout for violent extremists while conflating them with pretty much anyone who criticizes the government. Perhaps most troubling, the information apparently comes from the Department of Homeland Security, meaning that similar documents could be circulating in states other than Missouri.
