(NaturalNews) It was 1994 when seven tobacco industry executives stood before the House Commerce Committee and swore that nicotine in cigarettes was not addictive. Could it be that we're being told again that a chemical, in our food this time, is non-addictive when there's evidence showing otherwise? And could it be causing the massive obesity epidemic engulfing our country today?

John Erb was a developmental research assistant at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. It was while reviewing medical journals for a book he was writing called The Slow Poisoning of America, that he found something alarming. His theory and supporting research posits that the ubiquitous food additive, monosodium glutamate (MSG), is addictive and a direct cause of Obesity, Diabetes, Autism and A. D. Hyperactive Disorder. Needless to say controversy abounds.

Animal studies dating from the 1970's show that monosodium glutamate induces obesity along with a long list of unsavory ailments, but the FDA states that MSG is a safe food ingredient for the general population. They have no set limits on how much is allowed in foods and claim that regardless of the amount added to foods, it is safe. In addition, the International Glutamate Technical Society recruited researchers and medical schools to study the issue and concluded that there was no evidence that MSG was anything but safe; the logical assumption being it is harmless and has no effect on the human body..

MSG is a sodium salt of the non essential amino acid, glutamic acid, and was first introduced in the United States in 1947 as Accent Flavor Enhancer. In its pure form it appears as a white crystalline powder. Used by almost every fast food restaurant and food manufacturer you can think of to enhance the flavor of their food, MSG has many an esoteric name whereby it might be hard to recognize. Most of us are clueless that MSG is hidden in a product when it is listed on the label as hydrolyzed vegetable protein, sodium caseinate, Aginomoto, autolyzed yeast extract, soy protein extract or natural meat tenderizer.

Hundreds of studies and research have been conducted around the world by renowned doctors and scientists who have published vast amounts of information about the deleterious effects of MSG. Though it may not be a health hazard to everyone there are segments of the population whose health seems to be drastically affected by this additive.

In 1992, 60 Minutes rebroadcast a segment first aired in 1991 showing the toxic effects of MSG, but the pressure and back lash from Industry and others was so great that any mention of MSG by major media sources has virtually been nonexistent since then.

The findings of John Erb, that MSG addicts people to those products containing the additive and consequently makes them choose that product over others, might explain why manufacturers are adding MSG to foods in ever growing amounts and why we're getting fatter; we're addicted so we eat more and more. MSG has scientifically been proven to cause obesity in studies such as:

"Obesity induced by neonatal monosodium glutamate treatment in spontaneously hypertensive rats:
An animal model of multiple risk factors." Iwase M. Yamamoto M. Iino K. Ichikawa K. Shinohara N. YYoshinari Fujishima. Hypertens Res. 1998 Mar

"Hypothalamic lesion induced by injection of monosodium glutamate in suckling period and subsequent development of obesity." Tanaka K, Shimada M, Nakao K Kusunoki. Exp Neurol. 1978>Oct.

Of these two studies highlighted, notice the date of the latter. Interestingly the obesity/MSG connection apparently isn't new. Go to the National Library of Medicine (www.pubmed.com) and read the rest of the 115 medical studies for yourself.

Until next time, your health mate,

Yesterday I posted this Fat Chance post on them wanting us to believe obesity is caused by a virus. I had a friend who worked as a "food chemist" and they are developing additives which can now be listed as flavorings or as spices without being specific. Many of these are addictive and they cover the fact things are off and to make things taste sweet. Since they are "flavorings" and "spices" they do not have to undergo the tests for what they really are drugs.

We must learn to read the labels on our food. I avoided buying a soup yesterday because I saw that it contains Mono-sodium Glutamate (aka MSG).

Those soups are Progresso soups by the way.

However, it is possible that there are other "code-names" for MSG. I must know what they are.

I have also officially gone nearly two weeks without using a microwave. It is refreshing and it is slowly teaching me to prepare my own foods and use the stove and oven more.

A very good place to start: http://www.msgtruth.org/

With an amazing Pdf file flow chart linking many different 'things' together in a very neat theory.

http://www.msgtruth.org/images/Theor...Simplified.pdf

Do read this page even though it is on Rense.com

http://www.rense.com/general52/msg.htm

It contains alot of the 'unknown' names for MSG!:thumb_yello:

This Pdf is a hard scientific read, but worth at least saving and learning from.

MSG is the devil as far as I am concerned of the food world. Aspartame and fluoride are his hand maidens.

Re: MSG may be making us Fat and Addicted

A few months back, I put on so much weight that I hardly knew myself. My thighs were rubbing and I was so frustrated. I thought it was the meds. Finally I was stuck at home and trying to stay out of my hubby's way I spent hours just researching health issues.

I got into the NaturalHealth web site and decided to stop my intake of sugar and Pepsi. This was actually easier than I thought it would be. I then started reading labels and oh yes, they do have their ways of hiding the WORDS MSG.............Anyhow, I started using colloidal silver and went on vitamins and nutrients. I eventually dumped all my meds. My husband kept saying "be careful" Now my daughter started the same process and she has lost 18 1/2 lbs in 30 days. I realize thats taking it off slowly but your chances of keepping it off is greater this way.

I use sugar root from Hawaii and I'm happier. I tried honey but that just doesn't sit well with me. I also refuse to drink milk which is also so bad as all dairy products. I used to "inhale" my yogart but that too is no longer part of my diet.

Since I dumped these items.....sugar,milk,yugart,cola, my hunger has dwindled to zero.

All I know is I feel much better and those hunger pangs have gone along with the ****.

So many of these items have mercury in now a days and I imagine the list goes on.

Thank you FDA and all you jerkoffs running this world.....
for destroying our food.

Thank you Egg for the other articles about MSG. There used to be a couple of things in the store that I would buy because it did not have anything unlisted and none of the ingredients were bad. Last time I went shopping the label looked different and sure enough they had added bad things. I now make most of my meals with an occasion stray, and my lists of restaurants is down to a select few. Even in the "health food stores" most of the prepared foods have msg in them.

I have to avoid 100% MSG because of a very strange reaction: It gives me an almost superhuman rage that has been likend to a beserker rage - I snapped 4 guage washing line with my bare hands in a fit of temper after a curry that was labled as MSG free.

Its in my opinion an evil additive, and one place in food on purpose to do one thing and thats hasten our demise.

I find that if I eat something that has MSG in it, I start craving sweet things immediately and then want to take a nap. I found that many places do not know what is put in the food. It can be an ingredient in a broth they use , so they say no we do not use msg.

There is the classic MSG 'hit'.

It has messed with the brain and the brain scrambles around trying to compensate for it, and thus screams out for the fastest acting cure; sugar followed by sleep.

It will work over time when your crashed out to repair or smooth out the MSG disruption, and needs you asleep to do this because of certain chemicals that become freely available once your in the land on nod.

There is a mother here in New Zealand who has written a book shes called "Jenna's Journey". Its about her experience with her baby's elergy to msg. The mother is in the health and fitness field, so was very savvy as far as health foods go, or thought she was. Her baby at months, was covered in sores. The poor wee thing was an absolute mess. Her mother searched endlessly for answers. The baby meantime was demonstrating alergic reactions to most foods. Eventually the mother traced the cause to a chinese meal she had when she was six or seven months pregnant.

The cause of this severe allergic reaction was msg. This mother then searched out and eliminated all foods containing msg. The list was astounding. They give it different names in many cases but its still msg. After because two and four weeks the baby's allergies were gone and her skin was perfect. The photos of before and after in the book are amazing.

This mother holds seminars now to tell people of her experience and to teach them about healthy choices. Her family's diet now would be according to Weston Price. A back to basics of growing your own food, using animal fats and keeping right away from processed anything. I went to one of her seminars, and must say this lady was a great example of a truly healthy looking person. Her skin glowed, no trace of makeup and she only uses coconut oil on her skin
