Project Avalon Chat Room

The Project Avalon chat channel can be accessed by clicking the link below

http://projectavalon.2012info.ca/

This idea has been tossed around before and with some support it would work very well for us. The point has been made that a chat room can harm the forum, this is the farthest from the truth in my experience. Chat rooms and have been around since before the web and now are integrated into many forums to enhance the users experience. A chat room gives users the ability to converse in realtime about the topics posted here. Forums hold alot more information and are not limited to 2 or 3 line posts like on IRC and therefore are two completely different means of communication. Project Avalon is here to gather the "Ground Crew" and to provide a place for networking. What better way to do so than with realtime chat in addition to Forum information.

We are co-creators of our reality - watch every word you think, say and write. I tend to forget this. Let's keep reminding each other until we have a new habit.
Many Blessings,

The first post regarding this was by sylph16 last November( http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=6656 )which raised my interest and since Sol Invictus started his post at http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=9111 last December I have been busy building. Sols post was recently revived as well as interest in the idea. With the last few tweaks I have done this week, I think this is what we are looking for.

Here is what I can offer at my expense (time and money):

The Basics:
  • A safe, secure web interface accessible with Firefox or Internet Explorer.
  • Searchable channel logs on the web so no important information said in public chat will be lost. (private chats are not logged)
  • Nickname registration so only you can use your name.
  • Channel user statistics where you can view a variety of stats on users in the channel.

The technical Side:
  • A small network of IRC servers capabale of supporting 5000 simultaneous users
  • A host of services to provide User and Channel registration as well as a memo system and of course network security.
  • Accessed easily with a IRC client like mIRC or Xchat at /server irc.2012info.ca or through the web based interface

What is needed now are a few people to help staff the place. Since the room/channel is open to all and not only Members here we would need some members of PA to act as Operators/Moderators to keep the place active.

Anyone want to help build this up? message me, respond here or join the chat channel.

Here's a snippet from todays logs, enjoy:original:;

[16:31] <Fredkc> speaking of 2012... here is a date for ya
[16:31] <Fredkc> 5/7/2012 or May 7,2012
[16:31] <Hunter> what is it?
[16:32] <Fredkc> ya know, I've been asking that very thing for 36 yrs
[16:32] <Fredkc> thats how long ago I "got" that one.
[16:32] <Hunter> how did u get it?
[16:33] <Fredkc> sitting in a chair in the living room... suddenly the numbers came at me one after the other. 5... .7..... 12
[16:33] <Fredkc> and then this bright vision of a white glowing being
[16:34] <Fredkc> I don't get many of those, so that one kinda stuck
[16:34] <Hunter> interesting
[16:34] <Fredkc> well said!
[16:34] <Hunter> it may be prophetic, well see soon enough eh
[16:34] <Fredkc> he heh
[16:34] * Joins: WebGuest (~WebGuest@user-147A0241.static.videotron.ca)
[16:34] <Fredkc> seems so.
[16:34] <Hunter> the Mayan calendar ends before that date
[16:35] <Hunter> so from that point on things should be pretty different to say the least
[16:35] <Fredkc> one of the things that occurs to me is... is some LARGE change were to happen later in that year... and you wanted to NOT be around to watch it...
[16:36] <Fredkc> I used to sign posts at PA with "Do try to be off-planet by 5/7/12"
[16:36] <Hunter> the 2012 movie is going to shake things up a bit
[16:36] <Fredkc> I thought people pegged the mayan calendar end as in Dec ?
[16:37] <Hunter> but it turns the whole thing into a amusement park ride
[16:37] <Fredkc> think so? I haven't peeked myself.
[16:37] <Hunter> Calendar ends Oct 28 2011
[16:37] <Fredkc> hollywierd stikes again
[16:37] <Hunter> yup
[16:39] <WebGuest> trailer 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VXa82AuwHU
[16:39] <Fredkc> but then Hollywood took Ayn Rand's book The Fountainhead, which was about personal freedom and made it about architectual fashion.
[16:39] <Hunter> heh
[16:42] <WebGuest> 2nd 2012 trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz86TsGx3fc
[16:42] <Hunter> 2nd ones better
[16:42] <Hunter> still
[16:42] <Fredkc> one with the president speaking ?
[16:42] <Fredkc> clicked to it.
[16:42] <Hunter> i find what they did typically bad in taste
[16:43] <Fredkc> ?
[16:43] <Fredkc> now on to "official trailer #3"
[16:44] <Hunter> I and many others feel something very real is happening and seeing the negative aspects on a big screen is not good
[16:48] <Fredkc> I do not disagree that yes, some large change is coming. To this day I still have no clear picture as to what, specifically.
[16:49] <Fredkc> and so far most "this is it!" scenarios, come with gaping holes in them, to me.
[16:50] <Fredkc> it's possible that it is a conjunction of several things that will provide a completely unpredictable mix
[16:50] <Hunter> too many false prophets these days that cloud our perceptions
[16:50] <Fredkc> what I do know is that, in some fashion or another, we come out the ther end.
[16:50] <Fredkc> I agree
[16:50] <Fredkc> and fear drives everyone to be "sure they know"
[16:51] <Fredkc> after all, if you can tell yourself you "know" then it puts a cap on fear, .... sorta.
[16:52] <Hunter> yeah, i expect to be dead in 3 years and dont fear it. I dont let the negatives in anymore and i feel MUCH better about life these days
[16:53] <Fredkc> has always seemed to me that, I am here to see something new started, and then I "move on".
[16:54] <Fredkc> at times I fear it coming. others I impatiently itch for it.
[16:54] <Fredkc> that's life, huh
[16:54] <Fredkc> LoL
[16:54] <Hunter> hehe
[16:54] <Hunter> its a need for change
[16:54] <Fredkc> I'm tellin ya, someone should be selling tickets to this planet
[16:55] <Fredkc> P T Barnumn, perhaps
[16:55] <Hunter> to this planet or off this planet. either way they'd be rich
[16:55] <Fredkc> yeah... "Scotty" would make a mint
[17:01] <Fredkc> Sonic Weapons positioned at Congressional Town Hall Meetings in San Diego. The device was stationed by San Diego County Sheriff deputies at a recent town hall forum hosted by Congresswoman Susan Davis.
[17:05] <Hunter> Ya know, i knew a year ago that Obama would be the catalyst for the eventual downfall of a great nation. I still have a glimmer of hope but as each day passes the hope fades
[17:05] <Hunter> :-\
[17:10] <Fredkc> this is year 9 of the Bush/Obama administration.
[17:10] <Fredkc> the people are no longer willing to sustain or insist on a free society
[17:10] <Fredkc> "Change" ?? this one has smaller ears.
[17:10] <Hunter> lol

Incidentally, GaiaLove is doing some very cool things to make it a nice place.

If you are using FireFox, (and if you aren't I recommend switching) you can add ChatZilla to it by simply going here.

Once you have done this, and FireFox restarts, you can open up ChatZilla to the Avalon room there by just clicking here.

Fred (yes, I am back.)

Thanks, it is a labour of love.:wub2:
I also feel that a backup meeting place is a must in the event the forum goes down for any length of time.
I strongly recommend all members bookmark the chat channels web page just in case.

And to add to that point check out this post: Project Avalon's IP address

Re: Project Avalon Chat Room

In response to several members who did not feel comfortable clicking OK to allow the Chat application rights to run on their system, A new interface is now online and replaces the java one.
  • This new interface will also provide those users whose 1st language is not english the ability to instantly translate incoming and outgoing text into one of more than 40 languages. :thumb_yello:
  • Upload and share files with other users
  • Posted YouTube urls are automatically embedded in the chat interface and can be viewed without leaving the page.
  • This goes for images and google maps as well.

There are quite a few people joining but the lack of moderators and active users is hindering growth. Anyone interested in helping out in this regard can contact me.

Re: Project Avalon Chat Room

Those babelfish program translations can be quite humorous sometimes.
Some languages put the verb at the end of a sentence so 'i am here' becomes 'i here am'.
Or at least those progs used to not account for that, i haven't used one since 5 years ago or so.
So maybe they've fixed that, but yes use them carefully. :original:

actually it was "killed" ..

There is a logical technical reason but i will spare u that lol, suffice to say i had set a certain security feature too high and there was a sudden rush of people joining the network. so it killed off what it thought were attackers. The network has sustained two attacks earlier this month so i am trying to find a happy balance between security and accessibility

S'all fixed now :thumb_yello:

Chat is fun. Hi GaiaLove!

GaiaLove 10-29-2009 02:49 PM

Re: Project Avalon Chat Room

Hi Bellsisland, I agree, its fun and has the additional value as a 2nd gathering point for members and nonmembers alike as well as a great way to get to know people. Forums are fantastic mediums for sharing of information and ideas and a chatroom is the perfect compliment to a community like this one.

The chatrooms popularity is growing by 10-20% weekly and now is getting about 75 people joining the channel daily. Which is why I put out a call to anyone with IRC experience that is interested in helping moderate the place. I have been doing it alone but do not have very much time each day to stay there and play host.

Members can send me a message or post here, non members are also welcome to apply and can do so by joining the network and contacting Aragorn in any channel there.

These are the positions needing to be filled
  • Channel Helper - No experience required, must be able to spend at least a couple hours daily in the chatroom as a host
  • Channel Operator - Experience in IRC is helpful as well as knowledge of commands i.e. Bans, kicks and channel modes. (4 hours a day min.)
  • Network Operator - Experience necessary in adding K-lines and G-lines as well as repairing netsplits and use of the DEFCON security system. (6 hours a day.)

Peace

Hello to all the newcomers and the reactivated users,
just a reminder that for live conversations the chatroom is open 24/7 for all members and non members alike.
As posted above we are still looking for anyone who is interested in operator positions there.

During the past 24 hours many Avalonians who had bookmarked the
chatroom page met there while the forum was down.
I encourage everyone to bookmark it in the event of a similar outage. :thumb_yello:

Hey folks, new to the forum.. nice to see a nice busy forum of like minds.. anyway great idea about the chat room guys... adds another dimention to the avalon community in general...

Would be great to (when the channel is established enough) have open forum days with perhaps guest speakers, a q&a sesh so to speak, amongst a mirriad of other applications.

ps sorry about the dire spelling

addition:
in addition and related to guest speakers, would be a great idea to use the chat room in conjuction with the radio show every thur, whereby folks can give real time feedback.

I tried the chat, my computer loads the page, I can see a list of users to the right, the writing space is there and I can write in it. However; I cannot see any text, neither the ones I've just sent or any body elses?

Any idea what might be the problem? I use Firefox in Linux (Ubuntu).
