faraday cages?

i would really appreciate any practical advice about protecting radio equipment from emp's. can radios be connected to the antenna and protected? is it possible to have a radio in regular use that is also protected? it isn't practical for me to pack the radios up in a box, so i'd like to know what protection is possible for a radio on the shelf, or is it possible to protect a radio that you use all the time?
any help would be greatly appreciated.:sweatdrop:

I think if you're really pushed for last minute stuff a freezer/refridgerator can do a bit of shielding electromagnetically as long as everything is placed inside without touching the sides?Copper is the best format aluminium is o.k. also.

You can't protect a radio in use since the purpose of the antenna is to receive and transmit EM waves. The EMP is an EM wave with a very wide frequency spectrum where the power level is so strong that it overloads and blows the electronics. In fact any unshielded wire (power cord) exposed and connected to your equipment will receive enough power to blow the equipment.
