US just attacked Syria

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php...show_article=1

Quote:

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Syria's state-run television and witnesses say U.S. military helicopters have attacked an area along the country's border with Iraq, causing casualties.
The report quoted unnamed Syrian officials and said the area is near the Syrian border town of Abu Kamal. It gave no other details on Sunday's attack.

Local residents told The Associated Press by telephone that two helicopters carrying U.S. soldiers raided the village of Hwijeh, 10 miles inside Syria's border, killing seven people and wounding five.

The U.S. military in Baghdad had no immediate comment.

It's been reported in Sryian media and the Jerusalem Post online - googled it and saw this on the BBC:

'US aircraft attack Syria border'

American helicopters have carried out an attack inside Syria along its border with Iraq, Syrian media says.

The official Syrian news agency Sana said the raid took place in the Abu Kamal border area, in eastern Syria.

It quoted residents as saying that the attack targeted a house in the area in which a man and his four sons and two workers died. There is no confirmation.

Another report, by the private TV channel Al-Dunia, said that nine people had been killed and 14 wounded.

It said that an unknown number of American helicopters attacked the village of al-Sukkiraya, east of the capital. It did not say when the attack happened.

"We are in the process of investigating this," Sgt Brooke Murphy, a US military spokesman, told the AFP news agency in Baghdad.

The US military has complained in the past that Syria is the main transit point for foreign militants crossing into Iraq.

Washington has accused Damascus of turning a blind eye to the problem.
We'll see how widely reported it is in due course.

So far Google has about 1600 news stories on it just fom the past hour.

This is a huge US provocation. I do not expect Syria to take it lying down.

Re: US just attacked Syria

i do not think this will amount to much. just like pakistan tolerates the cross-border skirmishes so too will syria i suspect.

seem the usa keeps pushing the limits of its cross-border forays further and further.

in the 1980's israel bombed a munitions plant inside syria and nobody said anything including syria.

so i suspect this will not amount to much.

I don't think Pakistan has been tolerating it (as seen with the recent skirmishes in the news, and bad reporting), and in my opinion, they are friggin flipping their she-et in terms of the situation and will not stand for anymore. It's a kettle pot thats really REALLY heating up over there.

Didn't know about the munitions plant thing, thanks for sharing that piece!

I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation for what happened. By the morning the American army will open our eyes with yet another enlightening reason for killing muslims. Part of the job I suppose, all in a days work. :lightsabre:

Hey arcora, you are installing fear in some people here who can't handle it just by the title of this thread! We're not attacking Syria, we just did an across the Iraq border raid into Syria, there is a difference. You shouldn't have labeled it like you did!

Dan I partially agree, but when you say "we" it worries me. do you actually feel associated with those people?

Curious to say the least.

I don't see a difference between attacking a Syrian village and attacking Syria. After all, didn't our 'leaders' proclaim 9/11 an 'attack on America'?

As for fear, that is the individual's response and they are responsible for it.

I for one am not afraid - just interested in watching events unfold and saddened for the people who died.

Re: US just attacked Syria

I guess, the Syrians have as much to do with their Government, as the Americans have with theirs.

What an outrage for the president to invoke the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in his address to the United Nations, a day after a Canadian government commission accused the U.S. of rendering a Canadian to Syria for torture. Did no one on his staff inform the president that Article 5 of that declaration explicitly states, "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment"?

For those, like Bush, who regard torture as a variant of college fraternity hazing, it would be instructive to consider the fate of Maher Arar as revealed in that devastating Canadian judicial report released on Monday. Arar, a Canadian citizen and engineer who had fled repressive Syria two decades earlier as a teenager, was seized by the FBI at JFK Airport and "rendered" to the government of Syria for nearly a year of being whipped with a "shredded electrical cable until he was disoriented"--that is, when he was not confined to his coffin-size cage.

The United States transported Arar to the very same Syria which Bush has been condemning since his first days in office, and as he did again on Tuesday, calling Syria "a crossroad for terrorism." So, will anyone in that somnambulant White House press corps dare ask the president why he would turn over a prisoner to such a government? And an innocent one at that?

US special forces launch rare attack inside Syria....Washington Post

Quote:

DAMASCUS, Syria -- U.S. military helicopters launched an extremely rare attack Sunday on Syrian territory close to the border with Iraq, killing eight people in a strike the government in Damascus condemned as "serious aggression."

A U.S. military official said the raid by special forces targeted the network of al-Qaida-linked foreign fighters moving through Syria into Iraq. The Americans have been unable to shut the network down in the area struck because Syria was out of the military's reach.

"We are taking matters into our own hands," the official told The Associated Press in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the political sensitivity of cross-border raids.
