Re: Five Acres and Independence
Hi Chris,
I got this book awhile back. Try www.amazon.com Other suggestions for the apartment dweller for a balcony garden: Dwarf fruit trees, even container grown minatures that bear full sized fruit. Hedges that bear sand cherries, and berries. Vines that produce edibles. Raised bed and container gardening. Potatoes and sweet potatoes, strawberries, cherry tomatoes under hedges and edging lawns Rural areas: Chickens (without the crowing roosters) and other quieter fowl, rabbits... Today it's possible to be self sustaining on one quarter acre or even less. Even inside city limits. Five acres is nice for those with the money and physical ability. Others can consider these sensible readily available alternatives. Even a cheap house on a river in a less desirable neighborhood provides source for fish, crabs, shrimp, that the farm of five acres lacks. Ideas for those without the monies for five acres. It can be done, even inside a major city!
