Re: Being humble - a key to eternity
for me being humble, is to be honest with your self, is not being afraid to make mistakes, recognize our own faults, is having selfesteem and not worring if we are better than the other, we should help eachother.
in a competing and selfish society where most of us live, pride can lead to arrogance and insecurity and we start being agressive and self centered. we should be simple in every way. light for all |

I think what we're talking about is service above self. Humility and humbleness are byproducts of serving others, without expectation of reward.

Re: Being humble - a key to eternity
In school as a young kid in the Bronx I was bully by school gangs that took my lunch money, my family enroll me in Martial arts at an early age. As I learn to defend myself I lost my fear of being bully and instead of using force I learn to use my intelligence and heart to deflect the bullies who could no longer intimidate me, soon many of my abusers became lifelong friends. The dynamic of choosing to be humble holds a powerful statement because the fearful reaction is to meet violence with violence and hence you see the results of that in our society today. People like Mandela taught a nation that the road to humility and forgiveness can conquer and heal a whole nation. tptw cannot intimidate you if you are no longer fearful of them thus they loose their power over you. Instead of meeting violence with violence I choose to walk quietly and carry the big stick of the heart of love, humility, compassion, forgiveness and respect.Take your best shot ,now lets become friends and let the bygones be bygones.

Re: Being humble - a key to eternity
You might be right,
I have walked many hells in this life without bowing my head, and that made the hells even more fierce, but I did not bow my head. Self pity, bitterness, and cynicisim and humbleness are enemies of the soul. a. |

Re: Being humble - a key to eternity
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
Marianne Williamson often incorrectly attributed to Nelslon Mandela I'm going to agree , in general, with annemirri especially on several points. I note comments made by grey beard with regard to AA, which I consider to be a cult, and one that demands people give away their power. Not healthy in my opinion, and I know former alcoholics who did and didn't do AA. The difference is the ones who did NOT do AA are no longer alcoholics, with AA the trauma is never over, you are always a recovering alcoholic, but somehow you will NEVER get there. How disempowering and infantalising. There is much to be discussed on AA alone if one wishes to. The Rick Ross forum has had many interesting and controversial data to support the evidence of cult behaviours by those at the top, not much humility there I'm afraid I guess its partly a question of semantics but just putting my unpopular view in. as a scorpio and all. |

Re: Being humble - a key to eternity
What about positive thinking and self esteem? Are they in harmony with the teachings of Jesus? Are they a new religion which is out of harmony with the words attributed to Christ? What is the underlying principle in the four gospels? Is it positive thinking and self esteem, or something else? Without going into a proof text rant, I must say that I find positive thinking much more biblical than self esteem! Faith is closely related to positive thinking, and is well thought of in scripture in general, and the teachings of Jesus in particular. On the other hand, self esteem is closely related to pride, and is decidedly not well thought of in scripture in general, and the teachings of Jesus in particular. An extreme rendition of the joining of positive thinking and self esteem is 'I Am God'...which is not something that the Bible encourages its readers to go around proclaiming!
The problem is self delusion and self centeredness. Not facing reality is a form of lying...to yourself! Self exaltation is self centered. Self degradation is also self centered. The religion contained in the teachings of Jesus is a religion of responsibility! To be responsible is to face reality...see it clearly...formulate a responsible course of action...and then to implement this plan. It is duty centered! The focus is external...not internal! When someone lives responsibly, the byproduct is appropriate positive AND negative thinking (which includes both faith and doubt), and an appropriate self image. They are the fruit...not the root! In other words, positive delusion is not the solution to negative delusion, and self exaltation is not the solution to self degradation! Responsibility trumps both positive thinking and self esteem! The religion of positive thinking and self esteem is not the religion of the teachings of Jesus. The religion of responsibility is the religion of Jesus! We should seek the exaltation of the Human Race...rather than the exaltation of ourselves. Pride goes before a fall...but so does a lack of confidence! Balance prevents a fall! Please don't misunderstand my seemingly harsh stance on positive thinking and self esteem. A negative thinking and self degrading Christianity opened the door wide open to these teachings. They have come as a breath of fresh air to millions of people around the world! But some have found Peale appalling and Paul appealing! Teaching and preaching centered in postive thinking and self esteem have been corrective...but they should not be normative! A religion of responsibility, as found in the teachings of Jesus is, in my view, the normative standard! The humble often submit to the proud. Refuse to kneel before tyrants! Stand tall...and lift! Re: Being humble - a key to eternity
when used correcly, the ego is your amigo. You can't live without it and as someone smarter than me said, why reinvent the wheel? The ego is grossly misunderstood and many are manipulated especially in new age philosophies ( as if the ones perpetuating this dont have one HAH) BUT its all due to the fact that we feel so guilty for having one, not our fault. Bring back the bicameral mind I say.

Re: Being humble - a key to eternity
Annemirri ,
consider that everything that you own in life, eat through whole life time, touch ,breathe is NOT yours.Everything is made from earth materials who were created by Creator. That is a fact solid as a rock. Even very soul that is you is not yours. You as I and everyone were created. We own nothing. Very air we breathe is a gift. Then how can you claim that you know or try to receive all love and not give it back? If you only demand your rights and demand love and respect, will you receive that freely ? Will someone respect you and love you freely or by fear? I think being humble is recognizing that we do not know all and that we need to be taught from Creator who knows all. I would be a fool if I had a chance to stand before God and say that I know better than him! |

Re: Being humble - a key to eternity
Annemirri, maybe you confuse being humble with being a slave?
Christ was never a slave , yet gave the great example of being humble. |
