BOZEMAN -- Videotaped portions of a road ecology workshop hosted by Montana State University's Western Transportation Institute are now available for free online for professional development.

The workshop's content will be of interest to practicing transportation professionals, land resource managers, conservation groups, students and the general public.

The workshop covers the basic concepts of road ecology and ways to lessen the problems caused when roads fragment the landscape and prevent wildlife from moving freely. Also covered are engineering considerations for making sure fish can pass under roadways, motorist behaviors near wildlife, and how to modify wildlife behavior near roadways.

The workshop includes an introduction by well-known Harvard landscape ecologist Richard Forman.

The workshop runs 112 minutes. Those enrolled can choose to earn 0.2 continuing education units for a $25 fee.

To register for the free course and to view workshop content, visit http://www.wti.montana.edu/Education...education.aspx.
