Haiti and the 'Devil's Curse'

While everyone piles on Pat Robertson, the rest of the mainstream media is making the same error he did, attributing Haiti's misery to the supernatural. Avoiding any discussion of the true history of Haiti, and the role of foreign intervention in bringing about Haiti's poverty and political instability.

Reuters

Quote:
PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Haiti's voodoo priests are objecting to anonymous mass burials as an improper way to handle the tens of thousands of dead from the earthquake -- and have taken their complaint to President Rene Preval...

Dumping the dead in hurriedly excavated mass graves without proper rites is seen as desecration in a country where many believe in zombies -- dead bodies brought back to life by supernatural forces who could persecute the living...

More than half of Haiti's 9 million people are believed to practice voodoo, a religion with roots in Africa. Some 80 percent also are Catholic and most Haitians see no conflict between the two.
after Katrina there were comments along the same lines, giving up Christmas to celebrate Kwanzaa in some churches is what brought the disaster down on New Orleans...

History of Haiti

Quote:
Columbus established a small settlement, but, when he returned in 1493, the settlers had disappeared, presumably killed. He claimed the whole island for Spain, and left his brother Bartolomeo Columbus to found a new settlement.

Following the arrival of Europeans, Haiti's indigenous population suffered near-extinction, in possibly the worst case of depopulation in the Americas. A commonly accepted hypothesis attributes the high mortality of this colony in part to Old World diseases to which the natives had no immunity. Taínos were able to survive and set up villages elsewhere.
Quote:
In 1664, the newly established French West India Company took control over the colony, which it named Saint-Domingue, and France formally claimed control of the western portion of the island of Hispaniola. In 1670 they established the first permanent French settlement on the mainland of Hispaniola, Cap François (later Cap Français, now Cap-Haïtien). Under the 1697 Treaty of Ryswick, Spain officially ceded the western third of Hispaniola to France. By that time, planters outnumbered buccaneers and, with the encouragement of Louis XIV, they had begun to grow tobacco, indigo, cotton, and cacao on the fertile northern plain, thus prompting the importation of African slaves. Slave insurrections were frequent and some slaves escaped to the mountains where they were met by what would be one of the last generations of Taíno natives. After the last Taíno died, the full-blooded Arawakan population on the island was extinct.
Now for any who are interested That is a very informative Wiki article of the history of Haiti over the past 530 years telling of continuous powershifts takeovers and occupations through modern day Haiti.

Looking through it's history, I'm really not sure which intervention you are speaking of...
