History and Development

Realizing how delicate our ecosystem is, one wonders how many species of beneficial bacteria have been unknowingly wiped out. Thanks to a chance event in 1982, one of these amazing species of bacteria was discovered- one that may have been on the brink of extinction.
Many beneficial microorganisms that existed prior to current agricultural practices lie frozen beneath glacial ice. Melting of this ice allowed water containing soil-based organisms (SBOs) to trickle down into fertile soil, where the bacteria could find an abundant food supply for their multiplication.
In this pristine environment, bacteria flourished, but this is no longer the case. Even if beneficial bacteria could reach agricultural fields, they would be destroyed by the indiscriminate action of pesticides and other chemicals.

Bacillus laterosporus BOD (trademarked as Latero-Flora) is a single cell life form which helps protect the nutrients in soil that plants need to grow. The plants in turn release the bacteria into the animals and people that consume them. ~ This is one way that nature, in its wisdom, refuels our internal ecosystems.

In 1982, while visiting a remote area of Iceland, an agricultural specialist from the US was dumbfounded by the size and beauty of the fruits and vegetables that grew on the region's farms. He visited a farmer, seeking an answer to this natural wonder. The farmer explained that in this area the soil had never been tampered with by any chemicals, herbicides or pesticides. Furthermore, the soil was not affected by acid rain or any other form of pollution. This area was truly pristine, and the inhabitants if the area were unusually healthy.
The agriculturist returned the US with soil samples from the area and found 117 different types of beneficial bacteria. After eight months of research, he isolated one very special strain: a spore-forming bacteria named Bacillus laterosporus BOD. He became convinced that this was the organism responsible for the remarkable growth of the plants he observed in Iceland.

At that time, all the research on this organism was in the field of agriculture. Boyd O'Donnell, the founder of Donnell Formulas, Inc., heard about the discovery and felt that there was a correlation between the health of external ecosystems and the human internal ecosystem, as was evidenced by the excellent health of the Icelanders. O'Donnell, an entrepreneur, decided to sponsor a pilot study to examine the value of this unique bacillus on human health. Over the next few years, many remarkable health benefits from Latero-Flora were discovered. The product underwent strict EPA testing in 1986. The results showed no oral toxicity at doses of 5 grams per kilogram bodyweight, which was the equivalent of using three ounces of the product per day on a person weighing 168 Ibs.
Testing at the University of California at Davis revealed that Latero-Flora inhibited the growth of several common pathenogenic bacteria. Further testing revealed that Latero-Flora is extremely effective in controlling a wide range of disease causing organisms, including: Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans.

In recent years, E. coli has been consistently in the news, and is considered almost commonplace. Research proved that Latero-Flora killed 97% of E. coli in 21 days. This is significant because E. coli reproduces extremely quickly and can be resistant to many antibiotics.
One of the most significant findings was obtained with Candida albicans: a 96% reduction in just seven days.
(It is important to understand that there is another strain of Bacillus laterosporus (known without BOD following the name) which has been known for over thirty years. Tests have shown that this other strain is not effective at controlling Candida; only the BOD strain produces the beneficial results.)
Another important benefit of using Latero-Flora for Candida is that unlike many other treatments, it does not harm natural lactobacilli in the intestinal tract, but rather helps their survival.
In addition to the anti-pathogenic effect of Latero-Flora, evidence also exists that it may actually help to bolster the immune system. Studies indicate that, in response to the presence of Latero-Flora, the body produces and stores antibodies which can be used when needed to fight off pathogens, and may also increase natural interferon.
It is interesting that Bacillus laterosporus BOD may have been plentiful on the earth centuries ago, and provided protection against disease. Since the industrial revolution, humans have introduced massive amounts of chemicals into the environment, which has resulted in almost total extinction of many species of beneficial bacteria. In the past, these bacteria were very likely to have saved the human race from extinction itself, as plagues and epidemics have spread through contact, but the soil maintained a repository of natural protective agents. Our key to survival in future may rest with these tiny life forms.
