Default Alone in South America?

This South America section has been pretty lame, IMO.

Heck, it's been really lame.

Well, I signed up and paid my money. Anyone out there who is slightly serious about getting something going down here?

It is true. The gov't subsidizes the gas price. Gas is so cheap that no one really pays any attention to the cost of a fillup.

We'll have to see how much longer that lasts, though. From what I read in the local blogs, Venezuelan refineries produce less gas than the country uses, so the extra has to be imported at the regular int'l price. With oil prices falling from $140 barrel to under $40, the gov't revenue will fall accordingly.

Hi asteram,

There seems to be a lack of South Amercian based people in the forum. I've seen some from Peru, you from Venezuela and I'm based down here in Northeastern Brazil.

Of course we must take into consideration that 99% of this forum is English speaking and many non-English speaking people would be turned off, if ever they even made it here from the search engines.

However I feel that although we aren't actually rubbing shoulders with one another because of the large distance between us, we can always be supportive to each others ideas and help each other with information that perhaps we weren't akin to previously.

It is us that makes the forum a success.

Best regards,

Steve

Asteram, you've got to be kidding me. Do you actually live in Isla Margarita??? I lived there for about four years, and well, I left for the reasons we all know.
I'm glad that you are concerned about this so called reality ( besides what you are enduring over there).
Let's keep this post up!!!

Hi there, I’m originally from Uruguay, now based in Europe.

Yep, the majority of South Americans are non-English speakers and wouldn’t be functional on this forum, esa es la verdad dura y pura.

You’re right Zelda, but with South Americans is different... they –we- are 600 million people! ... almost everything is translated into Spanish... for 90 % of the people (540 millions) English is not needed

I have studied languages (I speak seven) ... and during my life in Uruguay (25 years) nunca necesite otro que el español... eran otros tiempos....

Lo que pasa es que ahora, con internet y a la velocidad que van las cosas el Inglés se necesita como el aire, pero no se puede aprender tan rapido...

Las nuevas generaciones lo tendrán mas fácil...

Hi Asteram,

I did not realize I could post here ... I am actually not in South America but real close !
Even close to Isla de Margarita ... I am on Aruba.

Although we cannot meet face to face just like that I guess in case of no internet this distance
should be easy to bridge by radio.
I am a HAM radio amateur ... contact me whenever you think this might be an alternative.

I understand the feeling alone part. Although it's nice to meet Avalonians here there is nobody here on the island to
have a good face to face meeting.

Cheers

Hi Operator (and all)

I haven't checked this thread in a long while, surprised to see the newer posts.

I'm still on Margarita; seems like it is where I am supposed to be; much has happened and conspired to keep me here.

I'm putting some time and energy into the idea of a community here, an idea I had last fall that I put away for a while but have dusted off again.

Operator, if I may ask, what do you do on Aruba?

Hi Asteram,

I am not sure how to interpret the question ... I guess the reason I am on Aruba and left The Netherlands a little more than 5 years ago
is that I intuitively felt I had to leave. I have felt to leave the Netherlands all my life.

Currently I am self employed (I am a software engineer, programming websites) and trying to keep life as simple as possible.
So far I can't complain. I see some friends already in trouble being layed off and not getting paid their salary etc.
I also have a lot of flexibility to alter my schedule when necessary and have good opportunity to research etc.

This year for the first time I did not go on holiday to the Netherlands. bad luck, since the Camelot crew will be meeting there soon.

Till now I have been speaking openly with lots of people about things that are going on. I must say indeed the majority is
not ready for this.

However, a small but growing group is ...
I am thinking about doing a lecture or so on a local high-school in a couple of weeks.

Meanwhile I am personally preparing by growing my own food, work on alternative energy and extract water from the humid air.

Cheers,

Operator

Hi Operator-

A friend and I were talking the other day about the amount of distilled water from the air that air conditioners produce that is simply wasted. Likely everyone on this island who has an air conditioner is throwing away enough pure water every day to supply their drinking and cooking needs. I don't have a/c so that doesn't apply to me, but I'd say about half the people on Margarita do have a/c.

I make a living on line too, from my soil minerals website. Thank goodness for paypal.

Asteram, I can assume you live close to La Asuncion? where they have a blessed climate and it's always cool.
You are completely right regarding the use of the distilled water for household purposes; however, the production of water is relatively low. Now then, when you see those big beach front hotels in the area of Avenida Libertador, their A/C system is based on chilled water, and thus some of this water, can be used for non-consumption. Eg: Waterclosets, ect.
It is nice to see you back and up again.
My regards to this beautiful island and all the loved ones I left behind
