Off the Grid Day
The First Sunday of every Month is now "Off the grid day" at the Casa de Mizar.
At midnight Sat, the main breaker is pulled and not put back on until Midnight Sunday, ( or 6 AM Monday when I get up). Battery power, wood heat, cooking with propane, coffee brewed on the woodstove, playing card games or for the 20 something Mizarsons, watching movies on the laptop are all standard now, as well as little things like opening the garage doors by hand. It's a pain to reset all the appliances, however our power goes out about once a month anyway, and 24 hours is not going to spoil anything in the Freezer, ( several gallon jugs of drinking water are frozen solid there). This way, no one will think they are hard done by when we really have to go off the grid, the first 24 hours will just be an off the grid Sunday for us. Everyone knows where the backup lights are, where the candles are, where the hand can opener is, and why not to open the fridge just to look around. Battery clocks tell us the time, and the candlelight enhances Mrs. Mizar's features and attitude, hey it's like a Win Win, except when there is football on Sunday, but you have to give up something to get something. Re: Off the Grid Day
Awesome. I certainly recommend this kind of thing.
Yours is a sort of Alert Level 1. Alert Level 2 ups the ante: you turn of the power and the water, for three days. A.. |

Re: Off the Grid Day
My first thought was: "Boy, if I lived in a house that's what I'd do!"
Then I thought, why not? It'd be just as easy in the apartment...I can get my hands on a solar oven.... Thanks for the push! |
