correct, once it hits the shallow water shelf the volume can grow exponentially..

interesting on the timing at 3:34 for the recording.. could it actually have been initiated at 3:33 and recorded at 3:34?

Hawaii - wave(s) predeicted to hit around 11:19 am PST. The snippet I read said it could be the biggest to hit there since the tragic 1960 tsunami.

Le't all pray that no others are hurt and for the peoples of Chile to recover quickly

TIME – TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL – TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS …NOT… CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER – PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED
WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL
CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND
SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY
SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM
ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND
THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE.

FOR ALL AREAS – WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

Steve in Brazil;

Any kind of pictures you can get from Concepción I would appreciate. I will post anything I can find thats new, as well.

I lived there during the 1960 9.2 quake! It was a mess!

This one is now rated an 8.8.

The Richter scale is not linear in nature. a 7 is 10 times stronger than a 6, and so on.

So this quake was about 15 times stronger than the one that hit Haiti.

A CNN report from last nite:

More as I dig stuff up.

Chile, lo siento con my corazon. Buena suerte.

Civil defense called my husband about the tsunami heading to the islands around 6 am our time. He's on call and now out helping the patients get ready. He said you know it is serious when civil defense calls. Our Karen from here notified us at 1 am when she called to warn us about the tusanmi and Reinhard wanted me to thank her. The power company which are built on the coast line and docks are at risk with something like this and they are closing some of the low lying roads.

Check out this activity. http://www.iris.edu/seismon/

The phone has been ringing all night. They have to evacuate patients who are in the low lying areas and make sure those who need oxygen are taken care of.

Thank goodness we have our solar generator if the power goes out. We are wondering how this may affect the power company. People don't realize that Hawaii is also dependent upon gas for electric and if the docks are damaged then there can be a problem getting food and fuel in. 97 percent of Hawaii's food is from the mainland.

Needless to say I've been pushing for folks to be prepared and feel comfortable that we will be alright. I truly feel for the folks in Chile and hope they get help.

Stolen from CNN's home page:

Chile is a bit better prepared for this kind of thing, if there is such a thing.
(no, I doubt this was HAARP, no profit in it, really)

Trouble is, all this "earthquake-proof" engineering basically stops at 8.0. Anything after 8.0 isn't an earthquake, anymore, but a "Great Quake".

An 8.8 shaker is basically 8 times stronger than what modern buildings are designed to withstand.

Think of it this way. An animal's instinct during a quake, is to run. And you have to do something very drastic to get an animal to over-ride their panic reflex in a life-threatening situation, right? Well...

During the 9.2 in May, 1960 farmers reported that at it's peak, their animals stopped trying to run away. They simply laid down, and waited for it to end. It's that strong. Also, for anyone who has been in even a small one, you know that you also get a severe case of vertigo, as the one thing your body absolutely relies upon holding still, is tossing you about.

Ok, I just watche4d a bit on UniVision, and so far, Concepcion has about 152 dead. but it's early. 2-3 foot cracks in the roads, bridges and buildings down, all over. So far 3 hospitals there have collapsed.

I only got a quick glance at it, but it looks like the old bridge across the Rio Bio is also down. s h i t.

More in a bit,

Fred

From UniVision:

Univision.com y Agencias
El gobierno de Santiago dijo que la cifra de muertos es provisoria y que no tiene comunicación con el sur del país

Santiago appears to be cut off from the lower half of the country. No communication.

A live TV feed, in spanish, from Univision can be seen here:
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/tv-de-chile

Came back to add... this link above for a live feed is doing a great job.
Yes, it's in spanish, but the pictures tell you everything, really.

If you live in a Pacific coastal area - keep an eye on the advisories. We were just upgraded to a warning (2-4pm PST). Originally we weren't even on the list.

And keep sending love to all

CNN has some footage here, as well:
http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americ...ex.html?hpt=T1

Yes, Exe.. this was big enough for Argentina to feel the original quake, and most of the aftershocks, which have reached 6.9... good enough to be an earthquake on it's own.

Hi 5th ! BTW they just issued a tsunami alert for the Oregon coast, so.. be alert up there!

They just said before everything is said in done there predicting a 7.8 aftershock

. If this earthquake activity follows the same patterns as the last one

in Haiti the next few days should see a spike in sensitives being more psychic.

Think more along the lines of 60 times stronger then the quake in Haiti.

Its almost mind boggling to think about it

ok, re. strength

The Richter scale is exponential, not linear. Each "number" is 10 times stronger than the last.

The guy on CNN keeps saying "32 times" but if I recall right... he has his facts wrong.

Will check my facts,

Fred

there are 2 different factors in calculating the size of an earthquake, shift and shake.

The shake was much more extreme in Haiti but a very shallow shift.

The shift was huge in Chile one reason why the Tsunami was created but the shake was low, one reason it didn't do more damage to buildings

Yeah im getting that too after having a look around... 900 times more powerful to be precise.. wow

Quote:
How thunderous is 8.8 quake on the Richter scale? The energy released is between 500 and 900 times that of the magnitude 7.0 quake that hit Haiti on Jan. 12, he said. On the complex scale that measures earthquakes, an 8.0 quake releases 30 times the energy of a 7.0, and a 9.0 would release 30 times that, meaning 900 times more energy. An 8.8 would be somewhat less, Dixon said.

I may be wrong but as far I remember each decimal point on Richter scale means 10 times bigger...(however it would be good if somebody checked it)

The Wikipedia page for the earthquake is pretty exhaustive already:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Chile_earthquake

Also:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter...ter_magnitudes

Quote:
Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; in terms of energy, each whole number increase corresponds to an increase of about 31.6 times the amount of energy released.
