In one of Wayne Dyer's books he writes
"Ego stands for.

Edge God Out."

That kind of sums it up.

The ego thinks it and what it is doing is more important than anything or anyone else,
God is rarely given credit or even thought of.
Humility whats that???
Ego doesn't have a clue, it lives in ignorance.
It doesn't need to be attacked feared or anything like that, just forgiven and surrendered to the love of God.
Its not what you really are.
Its a pretender!!!!
BUT its got most people fooled in to believing and identifying with the "me" story.
Im so important look at me!!!
Im so important in my success or miseries.
Specialness is the last resort of the ego, it cant abide humility.
Jesus so humble.

There is only one sin (error)
IGNORANCE ( LACK OF KNOWLEDGE)

Jesus said on the cross "God forgive them for they know not what they do"
in other words ignorance.

liquidate the ego now as rapidly as we can ...
for it is NOT ... the asset we thought it to be ...
we can no longer profit from the ego ...
moving forward ... in but a short while ...
the ego will not be a beneficial investment ...
but rather ... one of the heaviest debts we can carry ...

the time is now ... do something with it ... whatever works ...
liquidate it ... lighten the load and be ready for the new ...

the time is now ...

namaste ...

Greybeard I admit I did not read your initial post or barely few comments on this whole thread but I popped right here and right now.

I will not quote anyone here, I will rather say this;

whom ever wants attention to himself/herself ,an attention that surpasses normal or positive one ,is driven by ego.

Now to transcend that stage takes humility.
Humility often comes in various shapes and packages, according to any particular soul, so that everyone tomorrow don`t have an excuse that they didn`t know or given chance to change.

Sometimes one`s got to bang his head into thick wall for a couple of times to see the truth and transcend. Some look that banging and quickly learn for themselves.

I banged my head few times in my life and as I grow as a person I try whenever I feel that I will bang again,to stop and think. To grasp where I got stuck.

That`s why ,as I wrote in another thread , I think that firstly you got to love and love more and then see what happens.

Ego is like a disease breaking us down and putting away healthy pride.

Hi Beren
Glad you popped in.
Having read some of your posts I dont think you need to read anything on this post.
You have it in One.
Humility has been touched on here but it needs to be heard repeatedly.
One teacher said. "Man rarely learns by gentle reminders."
Sometimes some head banging is necessary.
Please feel free to post here whenever you feel the urge, your experiences are of great value.
Thanks Chris

Beren touched on it.
Yes pride is healthy when it is well founded.
A world champion can honestly state "I am the best at this moment in time"
A mother can say "I am a good Mum".
It is good to take pride in what you do, do it well, offer the end result to God, that takes care of ego.

When God calls and you answer. Yes Father Im coming home. Ive had enough of playing, then all hell is let loose so to speak.
The ego trembles.
Relationships of all kinds change disolve.
That which was so so important is no longer relevant.

Short sayings that have been read pop into mind when needed.

"Would I rather be right than be happy?"
"Let go let God"
"When wrong promptly admit it"
"There is no such thing as justifiable anger"
and many others.
The ego fears them.

Another day, wonder what this one will bring.
The past is history the future mystery.
We make plans and God laughs.
Life is for our own good.
The most growth is in the difficult periods, the vicissitudes of life give us the opportunity to exercise spiritual muscle and every kind thought word or deed is like putting money in the spiritual bank and you never know when you might need to make withdrawal.

Love Chris

Thats Scottish for an ok guy and then some!!
Scots on the whole are not particularly demonstrative, so "not half bad" is a major compliment and you deserve it.
Love your thread.

Greybeard, did you know that in Serbian line of genetic among Slavic predominant genome ,we as a nation have around 15% of Celtic DNA ?

So Irish,Welsh and Scots are kinda close relatives to Serbians...
No wonder why I always had a goose bumps when hearing Irish music (NOT U2 )and Scottish pipes...

Greybeard laddie, wish that I am closer so we could have a pint or two close by your local loch.

But I would skip haggis

What is the "ego"?

It is the 'thinker'; the purpose of which is to maintain, out of fear and desire, the temporal continuity of the "self".

In the Revelation of John, the "self" is symbolized as the "beast of the sea"; whereas the 'thinker' is symbolized as the "beast of the earth".

(There are symbolic parallels to the opening passages of the Second Meditation of Descartes.)

How to 'transcend' the 'thinker'?

It is either easy or impossible. There is no middle ground.

Just step outside of that consciousness and observe the 'movement' of self-reflection which is the origin of the space of the "self", in which case it is observed that the only function of thought is to preserve the duality of that "self".

I was told my great grandmother was of the "black Irish". Do you know what that means in terms of genetic origins?

Strangely but after all these shared awarenesses regarding ego I find I am more relaxed about it and don't even kick myself around the block when the slip of my ego peeks out :-)

Talking Re: The ego what is it? How to transcend?

Hi Chris and everyone, the ego as a young man I would be at bit angry at the slightest insult, in the ARMY fighting was a way of life. Now as I am getting older insults makes me laugh and I am a lot more patient and compassionate . Does this mean my ego is vanishing or is just hiding in some corner? Now my ego is tested all day long by my young children . The running around ,the yelling, the throwing of toys all around the house could drive anyone batty yet I often join in the madness and just learn to enjoy my kids. I am a strict Father because of my military background , although inside I am a huggie bear.
To be humble is something we have to work at everyday my kids are my teachers and I still have a long way to go.

Hi Beren
Yes who are the Scots? A very mixed race but as you said strong Celtic influence.
I would enjoy a pint with you, mine would not contain alcohol, I know just the place beside Lochness. We could do some monster spotting and depending on what you drank you might just see it.
Funnily enough a lot of sane and sober people have seen something unusual out there, who knows?
The pipes are a very spiritual instrument, they have what is called Grace note.
My ex wife is Irish and I spent happy days in Dublin and enjoy the Irish music and story telling.
Love Chris

Thats great my friend. Its not to be feared just tamed then transcended. You tame it with love. Just surrender the egoic thought to God when it comes up. He will look after it for you.
Black Irish Im not too sure about but there is a strong Spanish connection, the Spanish Armada was wrecked and survivors settled there and married the local girls.
My son Michael looks like a gypsy. I have Irish blood.

Ego is unhealthy pride. To transcend it you got to turn it into healthy one.

Starts with humbleness...
