Default "New WISE Infrared Space Telescope To Launch"

An article from the Earthfiles website:

December 7, 2009 - New WISE Infrared Space Telescope To Launch.

“It's really a mission to survey everything that's out there.
What we're trying to do is make a map of the universe.”
- Edward Wright, Ph.D., Univ. of California - Los Angeles.

Center of our Milky Way galaxy imaged in combination of infrared
and x-ray by the Spitzer Space Telescope, Chandra X-ray Observatory, and Hubble
Space Telescope. By the weekend of December 11 - 13, 2009, the goal is to launch
NASA/JPL's latest space telescope - the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer, also
known as WISE. Image courtesy NASA Chandra X-Ray Observatory.

From 325 miles above Earth, its mission is to detect and make a skymap of all objects in the cosmos that emit infrared light or heat that often cannot be seen by optical telescopes. WISE will revolve around Earth fifteen times a day and take about 7,500 images a day in four infrared wavelengths. It will take WISE about six months to cover all that can be seen from Earth. WISE will also catalog the asteroids and comets by size and location that could come close to or hit Earth. See: WISE.

I LOVE technology when it works like this!
