Default Fed Up by Expense, Smokers Grow Own Tobacco

"Fed Up" seems to be a popular phrase these days!

Fed Up by Expense, Smokers Grow Own Tobacco

Seed suppliers report a tenfold increase in sales as many seek cheaper fix

RICHMOND, Va. - Something unusual is cropping up alongside the tomatoes, eggplant and okra in Scott Byars' vegetable garden — the elephantine leaves of 30 tobacco plants.

Driven largely by ever-rising tobacco prices, he's among a growing number of smokers who have turned to their green thumbs to cultivate tobacco plants to blend their own cigarettes, cigars and chew. Byars normally pays $5 for a five-pack of cigars and $3 for a tin of snuff; the seed cost him $9.

"I want to get to where I don't have to go to the store and buy tobacco, but I'll just be able to supply my own from one year to the next," Byars said.

Gov't will probably pass a new law banning the growing of your own tobacco? Or maybe its already included in the law not allowing people to grow their own veggies.

I love it, people are so versatile, they always find a way, when things get tough

Here's a noble but unpopular thought: Why not just quit?

After all, why bother with such a dangerous habit in the first place?

I just don't have sympathy for smokers. My mother's a smoker and no matter how many times she says she's going to quit, she will never quit.

Don't like the high prices? Quit.

I believe that smoking may protect you from the flu, I gave up for a few years but now smoke one roll up a day for medicinal reasons
I'll have a go at growing tobacco next year

Everything is the way it is for a reason.

I too have the odd problem with my mum. She is however a person with freewill! I have learned that the things she does that annoy me are there to test me and make me realize that I must have compassion, and that I need to walk the talk with regards to the law of allowance.

At least she doesnt smoke any more. One of my earliest childhood memories is seeing my parents smoking and being totally wieided out by the idea that people would deliberately inhale that nasty smoke.

A..
