A device in a culvert targeted the Israeli patrol near the Kissufim border crossing in the middle of the strip. In addition to killing one serviceman, the blast was reported to have injured other members of the patrol.

Israel has vowed to respond harshly to any violations of the truce and a helicopter gunship raked the area near the blast. An Israeli jet broke the sound barrier over Gaza City moments later, a tactic that sounds like a very large explosion.

Palestinian reports said tank fire killed Anwar al-Dreim, who had been in the fields near the border.

Israeli officials blamed Hamas for planting the roadside bomb but there was no claim of responsibility.

Troops crossed the border fence into Gaza to search the immediate area of the bombing and the country closed its crossings into Gaza to humanitarian aid traffic.

Gaza border official Raed Fattouh said Israeli officials informed him the closure was due to the attack.

The Conservative spokesman on International Development, Andrew Mitchell yesterday warned that access to Gaza for international aid shipments was dependent on a stronger ceasefire. After meeting with Israeli and Palestinian officials, he said that adequate access for relief supplies was under negotiation.

"It's quite clear the ceasefire must harden so that unfettered access to Gaza for humanitarian relief can be put in place," he said. "Both sides have to lift their eyes to remove the connection between events and access.

"It is also essential that action is taken over the tunnels but I would point out that in addition to weapons these tunnels bring in essentials and if the border was open these goods could move freely into Gaza."

President Barack Obama told Middle East viewers in his first television interview since taking office that his government would ensure the time was right to restart the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.

George Mitchell, the newly appointed Middle East envoy, starts a regional tour in Israel tomorrow in which the former senator could travel to Gaza to see the devastation at first hand.

"The charge that Senator Mitchell has is to engage vigorously and consistently in order for us to achieve genuine progress," President Obama said. "It is not something that we're going to be able to do overnight."
