Looking from a very broad and simple perspective...

In our world, there are those who still recognize virtue. They are kindhearted, are magnanimous, and are even willing to make personal sacrifices for the benefit of others. They may think deeply about themselves and their responsibility to others. They care about the well being of others, and they aspire to be honest and good. They restrain their base desires and strive to be more understanding and compassionate towards others.

By contrast, there are those who are more selfish. They do not care much about others. They can be callous and are willing to harm others unnecessarily. They would even carry out any plot—no matter how warped or devious—in order to pursue what they deem to be their "self interest." Driven by egotism and greed, they are narrow-minded and won't even let go of the most petty benefits and pleasures.

So think for a minute—if this universe really is guided by intelligent factors, if you yourself were a being responsible for the safety of others and responsible for the health and stability of living environments, then which type of being would you keep and which would have to be cleaned out?

Place aside for a moment the myriad complexities of this kaleidoscopic world that we live in. I would suggest that the answer lies within our own fundamental nature. Whereas selfish pursuit, time and again, lies at the root of tragedy. Temper your heart. Look within yourself. Therein lies the path to the future. Yes, some sins and karma shall be repaid, but compassion will pull us through.
