I don't know of anyone who ever regretted having a stash of gold and silver.

As for barter goods, coffee, tobacco, and whiskey are my suggestions. Sugar, cooking oil, and matches are good too, but it's hard to go wrong with vices for trade. All of these things, if the person you offer them do doesn't need or want them, they will know someone who does.
