Strange NM Lights ! ;) [WEIRD ... A MUST SEE] ???????????
Strange NM Lights
A couple months back I attended the White Sands Star Party where over a hundred amateur astronomers set up their telescopes for three nights of observing. As the sun was setting the first night we saw a dimly lit column rising into the air. At first we thought it was a dust devil, but it never moved. As it became fully dark, we realized the column was a pair of bright lights shining straight up into the desert sky. I had the camera pointed toward the NNW. Holloman Air Force Base was far to my right so the lights were not from the air base, and a road atlas shows nothing but open desert in this direction. The illuminated clouds near the top of the picture give clues to the distance and intensity of the lights. I've been puzzling over their purpose. They remind me of the WTC memorial lights that were on display in lower Manhattan for a while. In the picture they are in the direction of the Trinity Site. Could there be a connection with that? |

its ok i do take the picture serious if its genuinely unusual inexplicable! I am sure there is someone on the forum who'd be able to explain these lights...its looks to me as if they are coming down not up, from a point in the sky? Reuters - do you believe they are in connection with the WTC memorial???!

HaHa you guys are all funny!, but seriously REUTERS why didn't you just walk over the hill and look? or the next hill or the next? The light is shining up for sure because it gets dimmer towards the top, and if you had telescopes there or spotter scopes, couldn't you use them to see something from the next hilltop?

I see this effect all the time in the winter... it happens with bright halogen lights. They have a light that shoots straight up from them. I believe it has to do with refraction in the frozen water crystals in the air. This is why you see it get dimmer as the light goes higher, away from its source.
I am not 100% sure about the physics, but I know that this is common and natural. |

What if we ignore the column of light and concentrate on the white things that seem to be moving up or down on a diagonal path. They all appear to be moving in the same direction. Snowflakes? Falling leaves? Do you get either of these at White Sands?

What's extraordinary about this scene to me is the fact that White Sands is pretty much in the middle of no where. Those big spots are pricey to rent for just a small social gathering, and White Sands isn't a major tourist camp spot...so I wonder what they were up to?

Re: Strange NM Lights ! ;) [WEIRD ... A MUST SEE] ???????????
Please before this gets any further out of control like most threads seem to, opinions are like a-holes, everybody's got one! Anyone can see it's a spotlight shining up into the sky, the only question here is what is the source? That's it, that's all, don't read any more into it than you have to!....P.S. sorry and good point Brinty! I guess what I'm saying is don't over evaluate it, like due to the gravitational pull of the moon during the winter solstice and with the correct alignment of the crystals and blah.blah,blah,blah. That's all.

Yes it is, however, it is also enveloped by White Sands Missile Range and just south of Holloman AFB, so my best guess would be a test of some sort of laser communication / weapon / other technology. Or simply a spotlight to help a test crew find / recover a piece of equipment…

Hmm lets see. Im in the middle of the desert, I see a bright column of light. I think I would find someone in the group with a 4 wheeler and go toward the light, pun intended, and see what the hell it is. I wouldnt just take a pick and wonder. Why wasn't anyone curious enough to drive towards it and check it out?
