St. Patrick's Day
Saint Patrick's Day — and the patron saint for which the holiday was named — has a colorful past filled with many traditions and stories. Upon closer inspection, it seems that a few of the legends told about Patrick were nothing but myth. We're here to clear the air.
How ironic is it that Ireland's patron saint wasn't even born on the island? St. Patrick was born with the given name Macwyn Succat around A.D. 385 in Scotland. It wasn't until he was kidnapped and enslaved by Irish bandits that he was brought to Ireland. Popular myth speculates that St. Patrick chased all of the snakes from Ireland. In reality, there were never any snakes on the island. This myth is considered a metaphor for converting pagans and Druids to Catholocism and "chasing" them from Ireland. Shamrock, or just sham? It's been told that St. Patrick used the three leaves of the shamrock to represent the Trinity (The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit). This was never found in his writings, so is unsubstantiated. Even though he is a Catholic saint, Patrick was actually born to a Roman Christian family. After six years in captivity, Patrick was said to have had religious dreams that told him to escape his captors and convert the people of Ireland to Catholocism. The first St. Patrick's Day parade was actually in New York City in 1762. This American tradition, in which some cities such as Chicago dye their rivers green, was only recently adopted in Ireland. http://events.yahoo.com/stpatricksday/2009/ |

Re: St. Patrick's Day
What are you all doing to celebrate St Paddy's Day. I was a bit sad I never made it to an Irish Bar yesterday. I did play Irish music though.

Re: St. Patrick's Day
I dunno. Im told by Irish folk that the rest of the world celebrates St Patricks Day more that they do in Ireland! Is that true Antonia
Love Carmen Ps I reckon the music stirs the Irish genes in people of Irish background. I know it does me. |

Re: St. Patrick's Day
Here is an expression which I believe explains why non-Irish celebrate St Pat's day with such fervor. . . . .
"Any reason for a party and having a good time is good enough." |

Re: St. Patrick's Day
From Swanny>"Why do people that aren't Irish get so excited about St Patrick's day??"
Cos~ we love you ALL > from those small (but) mighty islands!! A lot of us over here and everywhere in this world~ have relatives and lots of heritage from your part of the world. Why~ do American's get so excited and crazy about your Royal Family~ same thing! We are the original MELTING POT! Don't even ask me~ how crazy the Italian American's> get over Columbus Day (and he wasn't even Italian)! Lots of love too you Swanny! Note, America (once) took pride in uniting its citizens in common virtues and goals. Last edited by giovonni; 03-18-2009 at 12:05 AM. |

Re: St. Patrick's Day
i am very proudly of irish descent, from both parents. green is my colour, i try to wear earth tones, to remind me that i am of the earth.
however, i refuse to wear green on st patricks day. i was named patrick, and raised very catholic. i mourn on st. patrick's day. he was a book burner and boasts, in his 'confessions', to have burned hundreds of heathen books. this is in the fifth century, mind you, when books were works of illuminated art, hand done by scribes over many months. so, what was lost of irish culture, history, philosophy. it has been said that the druids left no written records. if they did, patrick burned them. patrick was a zealot and was responsible for beginning in ireland, what the spaniards and other enlightened christians did to the native americans, but twelve hundred years earlier. |

Re: St. Patrick's Day
he was a very BAD man , that st. patrick
he slayed "snakes" which were people, who would NOT become catholic !!! i'll celebrate my UK heritage -- i'm a DRURY !!! drury is loosely translated as druid The Drury's of Suffolk were a prominent knightly family in medieval days with a total of eighteen Knights, five of whom were Sheriffs of Norfolk and Suffolk, and four Knights of the Shire. Four Drurys, Sir Robert Drury of Rougham (died 1626), Sir Henry Drury of Hedgerley (died 1617), Sir Anthony Drury of Besthorpre (died 1638) and Sir Dru Drury of Rollesby (died 1626), were knighted in the Royal Garden at Whitehall on July 23, 1603 before the coronation of James I, a remarkable achievement for a single family. however, i will NOT celebrate st. patricks day Last edited by THE eXchanger; 03-17-2009 at 08:20 PM. |

Re: St. Patrick's Day
Yes, Oldpaganfreak, I resonate to ancient Ireland also, the land, the mist, the knowingness of pagan Ireland, before Patrick and his religion.

Re: St. Patrick's Day
My great , great, great grandfather fought in the civil war here in the states and was all Irish, afetr the war he walked for over 100 miles in the winter /snow with rags on his feet so he could see his family. He caught pneumonia from that and passed away a few days after he did see his family. My family!
My Irish grandfather was a professional golfer here in michigan in the 1930's, still have his wooden putter. Ah yes a day to celebrate , there use to be an "O" before my last name , got dropped but one day it's going back on. So I say Happy St. Pattys Day to the avalon family, Gonna have a few guiness tonight. Way to go with all the illustrations today on this thread, it's what I expected, much creativity! |

Re: St. Patrick's Day
Paddys Day when your young,
involves walkin up the town behind the local cement mixer lorry or semi vintage tractor, in your gaelic football shorts which offer no protection to the driving rain or hailstones peltin off your legs, to the sounds of a couple of tin whistle bands belting out the same three tunes all the way round. The weather was good this year, so heres a couple songs for ye all, for the day thats in it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2bTczkYv0U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nUUFEfy9x0 |
