Default Turn the TV Off!

Personally, I make one exception to this - "Sunrise Earth" - but, in my opinion, if you're a TV watcher, you don't have a chance of knowing what's going on and where this world is headed.

This thread is an appeal. We need more people to stop being fooled.

"Ohm-Pah, Ohm-Pah, Doob-Tah-Dee-Dee.
What do you get from a glut of TV?
A pain in the neck, and an IQ of 3."
-- sung by the elfin helpers of Willie Wonka in the movie Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.

My friend has been staying for the last couple of weeks while her visa for America is sorted out and the tele has been on all the time.
She watches Americas next model, the biggest loser Australia and American pop idol Complete crap the lot of it.
I only have it for the F1 and gaming, not much else. Since she has been here I've had headaches I blame the tele not her

Sneak the amp out of the plug and tell your friend telly's broke - I used to do that to my daughter's telly when she was younger until she caught on - so I took out the aerial and she can't get no channels!

You're welcome. I don't know if I could ever cut the tv out, but have made some changes in my viewing habits. I watch a lot more alternative media. I do have some must see tv.

WOW if it hurts to unplug, you need to, at the same time, I find it hard to part with my AOL browser just to see what the current generated crap is.
Tv is like the big window of an ant farm, fascinating! Haven't had it in years though.
Oh BTW when the guy from the TV license gestapo came to check , he high tailed it out of here asap after I vented my ....concerns. It was a kind of fun. May as well enjoy the apocalypse.
OK, I still have the box, I like films, sometimes. You know what's creepy? I want to buy a flat screen because I think that big ol box sits like a malevolent toad in the room but we were told in the shop where we looked at them that they could not sell us one if we did not have a license ,even if we only wanted it for DVDs . They said it was IMPOSSIBLE to detune the damn thing. do dee do do, (and that' s the "outer limits " theme playing)

What is a TV license? Does that mean you have to pay to watch TV?

thanks for this, Seashore -- i was raised w/o tv, in the '50s, making me a real oddball in school, since tv was the primary topic of discussion in elementary school; raised my children w/o it; & avoid it whenever & wherever possible --

TimeWarner did this amazing cable promo of 3 months of everything for $17, so i gave it a try -- this was the year of the nwo attack on the USAmerican people aka 9/11, so i presume the promo was to get as many people as possible watching the screen w/the repeating traumatizing images & the subliminals -- the ones they do w/color directly into the retina/optic nerve

i swear they sent a robot to ask me to continue getting cable service at the end of the 3 months -- i declined

recently i was stuck in a motel w/no books for some time, so i watched the tv -- what an amazing amount of propaganda for the nwo! & insulting, demeaning ads , showing the reptilian contempt for the human -- & encouragement of violence & meanness , etc

but even worse are the subliminals -- both visually & aurally -- they are coming fast & furious -- up till now i have avoided tv because it's a total waste of my time -- but these subliminals -- i don't want to see/hear them --

anyone reading this who watches tv a lot & thinks because they have a high IQ, that they can psyche out the messages & override them -- NOT! consider the minds behind the creating of these subliminals -- they live a LONG time -- & know the human mind very well -- now they finally have the technology & opposable-thumbed humans to do the work , & are getting those subliminals out there

very good book on tv : 'In the Absence of the Sacred' by Gerry Mander

may 2008 ... tv went bye bye for me ...
what an awesome freedom that has facilitated ...
still have one for the boys to watch ... but they rarely do ... at times a bit of gaming and perhaps to watch a dvd ...
even if they have it on when i'm walking by ... it has no pull for me any longer ... i could care less really ...
AND ... i used to watch the screen faithfully ... HUGE distraction ...
now ... whatever ... when the boys move out one day ... it will be gone ... i'll sell it or something ...
buy some plants for that space ...

one doesn't come to know how freeing not watching the tube really is ... until you've not done so for awhile ... i didn't ... now i have found greater peace ...

gita ... you are so clever!

If in any doubt, look at this commercial for HULU, I know it's been posted before, but it is the finest example I know of them telling you the truth about the box.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m71m-LBqFQ,

and thanks swanny, thought of that already, but, did you know if you buy any sort of telly paraphernalia on a credit card they pester you later for not having a license by data base info? The FOCKERS! Cash is king as they say.

I agree that the vast majority of tv is useless at best and even harmful in some cases, but there are some gems, though few and far between. The only shows I watch regularly are The Daily Show and Colbert Report, they both do a great job of blending irreverant humor with current events, and alot of times they're saying very relevant stuff that wouldn't fly unless it were under the guise of comedy.

Discovery's Planet Earth was awesome btw. Survivorman's good too.
Les Stroud is cool as **** in my book. The monlogue in the last minute and a half here might be the coolest thing I've ever heard on tv.

For years, I have just watched maybe one, good, programme a week (yes, litereally one!) like Dexter, Survivors (!), Dr Who...Lost (oh nonononono have only got to season 3 though! that's my life running away!) more recently Being Human...

Did seriously think of giving up the tv license last year as all this stuff you can buy on DVD (yes, in UK you pay for the right to receive free tv!) but still use it to record an occasional film. Love films...

And what do I do with all the free time I have accrued ???

I'll give you three guesses.

Great idea though seashore.. and there is new conspiracy info about regarding the flat screens ultimately being able to be two way screens... so they can watch you watching them... straight into your living room.

Course.. that's if you believe all that conspiracy rubbish of course
